STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY (for Power Tilt and Power Telescopic)

REMOVAL
1. PRECAUTION, refer to Restraint Systems Service Precautions.
2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
4. REMOVE INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH
5. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
6. REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
7. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
8. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER
9. REMOVE NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER
10. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD





11. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
(b) Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
(c) Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05011)





12. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Remove the 3 screws.
(b) Disengage the 2 claws to remove the steering column cover lower.

NOTICE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.





(c) Disengage the 4 clips to separate the steering column cover upper.
(d) Disengage the claw to remove the steering column cover upper.





13. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
(a) Disconnect the connector.
(b) Using a screwdriver, disengage the claw and pull out the tilt and telescopic switch.

NOTICE: Pushing on the claw too hard will break the claw.

HINT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

14. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the connectors from the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.





(b) Using pliers, grip the claws of the clip and remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.





15. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR DUCT
(a) Disengage the 2 claws and remove the No. 1 air duct.





16. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
(a) Loosen bolt (A) and remove bolt (B), then slide the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly.

NOTICE:
^ Do not remove bolt (A).
^ Do not separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering gear assembly.





(b) Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the power steering gear assembly.
(c) Separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering gear assembly.





(d) Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
(e) Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.





17. SEPARATE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
(a) Remove the bolt, and then slide the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.

NOTICE: Do not separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering link assembly.





(b) Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the power steering gear assembly.
(c) Separate the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering gear assembly.





18. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.
(b) Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly.





(c) Remove the 4 nuts and steering column assembly.





19. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering main shaft.
(b) Remove the bolt and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.

DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Using a center punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
(b) Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolts.





(c) Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering lock actuator assembly from the steering column assembly.
2. REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU

INSPECTION





1. INSPECT STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY (Tilt Motor)
(a) Disconnect connector J28 from the multiplex tilt & telescopic ECU.
(b) Inspect the tilt motor.
(1) Connect the positive battery terminal to terminal TIM+ and the negative battery terminal to terminal TIM- of the tilt motor connector. Then confirm that the steering wheel tilts up.
OK: Steering wheel tilts up.
(2) Connect the negative battery terminal to terminal TIM+ and the positive battery terminal to terminal TIM- of the tilt motor connector. Then confirm that the steering wheel tilts down.
OK: Steering wheel tilts down.





2. INSPECT STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY (Telescopic Motor)
(a) Disconnect connector A from the multiplex tilt & telescopic ECU.
(b) Inspect the telescopic motor.
(1) Connect the positive battery terminal to terminal TEM+ and the negative battery terminal to terminal TEM- of the telescopic motor connector. Then confirm that the steering column contracts.
OK: Steering column contracts.
(2) Connect the negative battery terminal to terminal TEM- and the positive battery terminal to terminal TEM- of the telescopic motor connector. Then confirm that the steering column extends.
OK: Steering column extends.

REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU





2. INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Temporarily install the steering lock actuator assembly with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
(b) Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.

INSTALLATION





1. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering main shaft.
(b) Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)





2. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the steering column assembly with the 4 nuts.
Torque: 26 N*m (260 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf)
(b) Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps to the steering column assembly.





(c) Install the clamp to the steering column hole shield.





3. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
(a) Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering sliding yoke sub-assembly.
(b) Temporarily install the bolt.

NOTICE: Do not tighten the bolt.





(c) Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the power steering gear assembly.





(d) Install bolt (A) and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)





4. CONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
(a) Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the power steering gear assembly.





(b) Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
5. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD





6. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly to the steering column assembly with the clamp.
(b) Connect the connectors to the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.





7. INSTALL TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
(a) Engage the claw to install the tilt and telescopic switch.
(b) Connect the connector.





8. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Engage the claw to install the steering column cover upper.
(b) Engage the 4 clips to install the steering column cover upper onto the instrument panel cluster finish panel.





(c) Engage the 2 claws to install the steering column cover lower.

NOTICE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.

(d) Install the 3 screws.
Torque: 2.0 N*m (20 kgf*cm, 18 in.*lbf)
9. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB- ASSEMBLY





10. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft assembly.
(b) Install the steering wheel assembly set nut.
Torque: 50 N*m (510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf)
11. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT





12. INSTALL NO. 1 AIR DUCT
(a) Engage the 2 claws to install the No. 1 air duct.
13. INSTALL DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
14. INSTALL LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
15. INSTALL NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
16. INSTALL INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH
17. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL PAD
18. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD
19. INSTALL NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER
20. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER
21. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
22. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
23. PERFORM INITIALIZATION

HINT: Some systems need initialization when disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal.
