Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair

PARK / NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH

Components:





ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a) Apply the parking brake.
b) Turn the engine switch on (IG).
c) Depress the brake pedal and check that the engine starts when the shift lever is set in the N or P position, but does not start in other positions.
d) Check that the back-up light comes on and the reverse warning buzzer sounds when the shift lever is set in the R position, but the light and buzzer do not operate in other positions. If a failure is found, check the park/neutral position switch for continuity.

REMOVAL
1. REMOVE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY





a) Disconnect the neutral start switch connector.





b) Using a screwdriver, unstake the lock washer.
c) Remove the lock nut and lock washer.





d) Remove the bolt and park/neutral position switch assembly.

INSPECTION
1. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

Park/Neutral Position Switch (Connector Front View):





a) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table.

Standard Resistance:





If the resistance value is not as specified, replace the park/neutral position switch assembly.

ADJUSTMENT
1. ADJUST PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY





a) Loosen the bolt of the park/neutral position switch and move the shift lever to the N position.
b) Align the groove and the neutral alignment mark line.
c) Hold the switch in position and tighten the bolt.
Torque: 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)
d) After adjustment, perform the inspection.

INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY





a) Install the park/neutral position switch to the manual valve shaft.
b) Temporarily install the bolt.





c) Install a new lock washer with the lock nut.
Torque: 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.)





d) Turn the control shaft lever counterclockwise until it stops, and turn it clockwise 2 notches to set it to the neutral position.
e) Remove the transmission control shaft lever.





f) Align the neutral alignment mark line with the switch groove, and tighten the bolt.
Torque: 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)





g) Using a screwdriver, bend the tabs of the lock washer.





h) Connect the park/neutral position switch connector to the neutral start switch.
