Rear Axle Hub

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
3. REMOVE REAR DISC
4. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB BEARING FOR LOOSENESS





a) Using a dial indicator, check for looseness near the center of the axle hub.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)

NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set perpendicular to the measurement surface. If looseness exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub assembly.

5. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB FOR RUNOUT





a) Using a dial indicator, check for runout on the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)

NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set perpendicular to the measurement surface. If runout exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub assembly.

6. INSTALL REAR DISC
7. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
8. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)

REMOVAL
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. SEPARATE REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY





a) Remove the bolt and nut, and separate the load sensing valve sensor bracket and stabilizer link assembly.

3. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT





a) Using SST and a hammer, release the staked part of the axle shaft nut.

NOTICE: Release the staked part of the nut completely, otherwise the screw of the drive shaft may be damaged.

b) Remove the rear axle shaft nut.

4. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
5. REMOVE REAR DISC
6. SEPARATE REAR SPEED SENSOR
7. REMOVE NO.2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
8. REMOVE NO.1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
9. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
10. REMOVE NO.2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
11. REMOVE NO.1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
12. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
13. SEPARATE PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY





a) Remove the 2 nuts, and separate the parking brake cable assembly from the rear axle carrier subassembly.

14. SEPARATE NO.2 REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM

ASSEMBLY
a) Remove the nut from the No.2 upper control arm assembly rear.





b) Using SST, separate the No.2 upper control arm assembly rear from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

NOTICE:
^ Use caution not to damage the rear axle carrier because it is made of aluminum and may be damaged easily.
^ Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.
^ Make sure that the SST is securely positioned on the rear axle carrier spacer.
^ If the rear axle carrier spacer has come off, replace the rear axle carrier with a new one.
^ Make sure that the string of the SST is securely tied to the vehicle.

15. SEPARATE NO.1 REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY
a) Jack up the rear axle assembly so that the bolt on the No.1 rear upper control arm assembly can be removed.

HINT: Place a wooden block between the jack and rear axle carrier to prevent damage to the rear axle carrier.





b) Remove the bolt, washer and nut, and separate the No.1 rear upper control arm assembly from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

16. SEPARATE NO.1 REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY





a) Remove the bolt and nut, and separate the No.1 rear suspension arm assembly from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

NOTICE: Turn the bolt while holding the nut.

17. SEPARATE NO.2 REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY





a) Remove the bolt and nut, and separate the No.2 rear suspension arm assembly from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly

NOTICE: Turn the bolt while holding the nut.

18. SEPARATE TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY
a) Remove the nut from the toe control link sub-assembly.





b) Using SST, separate the toe control link sub-assembly from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

NOTICE:
^ Use caution not to damage the rear axle carrier because it is made of aluminum and may be damaged easily.
^ Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.
^ Make sure that the SST is securely positioned on the rear axle carrier spacer.
^ If the rear axle carrier spacer has come off, replace the rear axle carrier with a new one.
^ Make sure that the string of the SST is securely tied to the vehicle.

19. REMOVE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY
a) Using a plastic hammer, separate the drive shaft from the rear axle assembly

NOTICE:
^ Be careful not to damage the boot.
^ Use wire or equivalent to prevent the rear drive shaft assembly from hanging down.

20. REMOVE NO.2 REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR





a) Using a screwdriver, remove the No.2 rear wheel bearing dust deflector from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

21. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY
a) Hold the axle hub and bearing assembly in a vise between aluminum plates.

NOTICE: Do not overtighten the vise.





b) Remove the 4 bolts, axle hub and bearing assembly from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.





c) Remove the 2 nuts, parking brake anchor block, cable support bracket and parking brake plate.

INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY
a) Hold the axle hub and bearing assembly in a vise between aluminum plates.

NOTICE: Do not overtighten the vise.





b) Install the parking brake anchor block, cable support bracket and parking brake plate with the 2 nuts.
Torque: 76 Nm (775 kgf-cm, 56 ft. lbs.)





c) Install the axle hub and bearing assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.)

2. INSTALL NO.2 REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR





a) Using SST and a hammer, install a new No.2 rear wheel bearing dust deflector to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.
SST 09951-01000, 09950-70010 (09951-07150)

HINT: Align the hole for the speed sensor in the No.2 rear wheel bearing dust deflector with the rear axle carrier sub-assembly

3. INSTALL REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY
a) Install the rear drive shaft assembly and rear axle assembly.

4. INSTALL NO.2 REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY





a) Install the No.2 rear upper control arm assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with a new nut.
Torque: 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.)

5. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN NO.1 REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY





a) Temporarily tighten the No.1 rear upper control arm assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the bolt, washer and nut.

HINT: Install the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.

6. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN NO.1 REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY





a) Temporarily tighten the No.1 rear suspension arm assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the bolt and nut.

HINT: Install the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.

7. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN NO.2 REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY





a) Temporarily tighten the No.2 rear suspension arm assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the bolt and nut.

HINT: Install the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.

8. INSTALL TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY





a) Install the toe control link sub-assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with a new nut.
Torque: 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.)

9. INSTALL REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY





a) Install the stabilizer link assembly and the load sensing valve sensor bracket to the No.2 rear suspension arm assembly with the bolt and nut.
Torque: 27 Nm (275 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbs.)

10. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY





a) Install the parking brake cable assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the 2 nuts.
Torque: 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.)

11. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE
12. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
13. INSTALL NO.2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
14. INSTALL NO.1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
15. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
16. INSTALL NO.1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
17. INSTALL NO.2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
18. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION
19. INSTALL REAR SPEED SENSOR
20. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT
a) Install a new rear axle shaft nut.
Torque: 290 Nm (2,957 kgf-cm, 214 ft. lbs.)

HINT: Stake the nut after inspecting for looseness and runout in the following steps.

21. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB BEARING FOR LOOSENESS
22. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB FOR RUNOUT
23. INSTALL REAR DISC
24. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
25. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
26. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT





a) Using a chisel and a hammer, stake the axle shaft nut.

27. STABILIZE SUSPENSION
28. FULLY TIGHTEN NO.1 REAR UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY





a) Fully tighten the No.1 rear upper control arm assembly with the nut.
Torque: 161 Nm (1,642 kgf-cm, 119 ft. lbs.)

29. FULLY TIGHTEN NO.1 REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY





a) Fully tighten the No.1 rear suspension arm assembly with the bolt and nut.
Torque: 95 Nm (969 kgf-cm, 70 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Turn the bolt while holding the nut.

30. FULLY TIGHTEN NO.2 REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY





a) Fully tighten the No.2 rear suspension arm assembly with the bolt and nut.
Torque: 161 Nm (1,642 kgf-cm, 119 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Turn the bolt while holding the nut.

31. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)

32. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
33. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
34. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE LEVER TRAVEL
35. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE LEVER TRAVEL
36. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
37. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
