Front Axle Hub

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
2. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
3. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
4. REMOVE FRONT DISC
5. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING FOR LOOSENESS
a) Using a dial indicator, check for looseness near the center of the axle hub.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)
NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is perpendicular to the measurement surface. If looseness exceeds the maximum, replace the front axle hub.
6. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB FOR RUNOUT
a) Using a dial indicator, check for runout on the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)
NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set perpendicular to the measurement surface. If runout exceeds the maximum, replace the front axle hub.
7. INSTALL FRONT DISC
8. INSTALL FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
9. INSTALL FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
10. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
REMOVAL
1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
2. DISCONNECT FRONT SPEED SENSOR (for 2WD)
a) Disconnect the speed sensor connector from the front speed sensor.
NOTICE: Prevent foreign matter from adhering to the speed sensor.
3. SEPARATE FRONT SPEED SENSOR (for 4WD)
a) Remove the 2 bolts, and separate the speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
NOTICE:
^ Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.
^ Prevent foreign matter from adhering to the speed sensor.
4. SEPARATE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
a) Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the brake caliper assembly (for 2GR-FSE)
NOTICE: Use wire or equivalent to prevent the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.
b) Remove the No.1 caliper plates from the brake caliper. (for 4GR-FSE)
NOTICE: Use wire or equivalent to prevent the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.
5. SEPARATE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
a) Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the brake caliper assembly
NOTICE: Use wire or equivalent to prevent the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.
b) Remove the No.1 caliper plates from the brake caliper.
6. REMOVE FRONT DISC
7. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB NUT (for 4WD)
a) Using SST and a hammer, release the staked part of the front axle hub nut.
SST 09930-00010
NOTICE: Release the staked part of the nut completely, otherwise the screw of the drive shaft may be damaged.
b) Remove the front axle hub nut.
8. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
a) Remove the 4 bolts, front axle hub sub-assembly and front disc brake dust cover.
9. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
a) Using a plastic hammer, separate the front drive shaft assembly from the front axle hub.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the drive shaft boot.
b) Remove the 4 bolts, front axle hub sub-assembly and front disc brake dust cover.
INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
a) Install the front axle hub sub-assembly and front disc brake dust cover with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 69 Nm (702 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.)
2. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
a) Install the front drive shaft assembly to the front axle hub sub-assembly
b) Install the front axle hub sub-assembly and front disc brake dust cover with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 69 Nm (702 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the front drive shaft boot.
3. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB NUT (for 4WD)
a) Using the socket wrench (30 mm), install a new front axle hub nut.
Torque: 294 Nm (2,998 kgf-cm, 217 ft. lbs.)
HINT: Stake the nut after inspecting for looseness and runout in the following steps.
4. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING FOR LOOSENESS
5. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB FOR RUNOUT
6. INSTALL FRONT DISC
7. INSTALL FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
a) Install the brake caliper assembly and new No.1 caliper plates to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts. (for 4GR-FSE).
Torque: 78 Nm (795 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE:
^ Do not twist the front brake hose when installing the front disc brake caliper.
^ Make sure that there are no foreign objects or damage to the threads of the bolts.
^ Do not overtighten the bolts because the steering knuckle is made of aluminum and may be damaged easily.
b) Install the brake caliper assembly to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts. (for 2GR-FSE)
Torque: 78 Nm (795 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE:
^ Do not twist the front brake hose when installing the front disc brake caliper.
^ Make sure that there are no foreign objects or damage to the threads of the bolts.
^ Do not overtighten the bolts because the steering knuckle is made of aluminum and may be damaged easily.
8. INSTALL FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
a) Install the brake caliper assembly and new No.1 caliper plates to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 78 Nm (795 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE:
^ Do not twist the front brake hose when installing the front disc brake caliper.
^ Make sure that there are no foreign objects or damage to the threads of the bolts.
^ Do not overtighten the bolts because the steering knuckle is made of aluminum and may be damaged easily.
9. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB NUT (for 4WD)
a) Using a chisel and hammer, stake the axle hub nut.
10. CONNECT FRONT SPEED SENSOR (for 2WD)
a) Connect the speed sensor connector to the seed sensor front.
NOTICE: Do not twist the sensor wire.
11. INSTALL FRONT SPEED SENSOR (for 4WD)
a) Install the speed sensor to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts.
Torque: Bolt (A) 14 Nm (140 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)
Bolt (B) 8.5 Nm (87 kgf-cm, 75 inch lbs.)
NOTICE:
^ Prevent foreign matter from adhering to the speed sensor.
^ Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.
^ Do not twist the sensor wire when installing the speed sensor.
12. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
