Compression Check: Testing and Inspection
COMPRESSIONINSPECT COMPRESSION
(a) Warm up and stop the engine.
NOTICE: A warmed up engine should have an engine coolant temperature of over 80°C (176°F) and an engine oil temperature of 60°C (140°F), and the engine rpm should be stabilized.
(b) Remove the cool air intake duct seal.
(c) Remove the bolt and No. 1 air cleaner inlet.
(d) Remove the engine room side cover LH.
(e) Remove the engine room side cover RH.
(f) Remove the V-bank cover.
(g) Remove the air cleaner cap with air cleaner hose.
(h) Disconnect the 3 clamps and connector.
(i) Disconnect the 4 connectors.
(j) Disconnect the throttle body connector.
(k) Disconnect the 6 injector connectors.
(l) Remove the 6 ignition coils.
(m) Remove the 6 spark plugs.
(n) Disconnect the 2 injector driver connectors as shown in the illustration.
(o) Inspect the compression pressure.
(1) Insert a compression gauge into the spark plug hole.
(2) Fully open the throttle.
(3) Depress and hold the brake pedal, and turn the engine switch on (READY). Then check the compression pressure.
HINT: Always use a fully charged battery to obtain engine speed of 250 rpm or more.
NOTICE:
The measurement must be done as quickly as possible.
Standard compression pressure: 1.4 MPa (14 kgf/cm2, 199 psi) or more
Minimum pressure: 0.98 MPa (10.0 kgf/cm2, 142 psi)
(4) Perform the inspection above for each cylinder.
Difference between each cylinder: 0.1 MPa (1.0 kgf/cm2, 15 psi) or less
If the cylinder compression in one or more cylinders is low, pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole.
Then check the compression pressure.
HINT:
^ If adding oil helps boost the compression, it is likely that the piston rings and/or cylinder bore are worn or damaged.
^ If pressure stays low, a valve may be stuck or seated improperly, or there may be leakage in the gasket.
(5) Turn the engine switch off and the intelligent tester main switch OFF.
(p) Connect the 2 injector driver connectors as shown in the illustration.
(q) Install the 6 spark plugs.
Torque: 18 N*m (184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf)
(r) Install the 6 ignition coils.
Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)
(s) Connect the 6 injector connectors.
(t) Connect the throttle body connector.
(u) Connect the 4 connectors.
(v) Connect the 3 clamps and connector.
(w) Install the air cleaner cap with air cleaner hose.
(x) Install the No. 1 air cleaner inlet.
Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf)
(y) Install the V-bank cover.
(z) Install the engine room side cover LH.
(aa) Install the engine room side cover RH.
(ab) Install the cool air intake duct seal.
(ac) Clear DTCs.
