Thermostat: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER (for 2WD)
3. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER (for 4WD)
4. REMOVE COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL
5. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR CLEANER INLET
6. REMOVE V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
7. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
8. DISCONNECT NO. 2 RADIATOR HOSE





9. REMOVE WATER INLET SUB-ASSEMBLY WITH THERMOSTAT
(a) Remove the 3 nuts, water inlet with thermostat and gasket.

INSPECTION





1. INSPECT WATER INLET SUB-ASSEMBLY WITH THERMOSTAT

HINT: The water inlet with thermostat is stamped with the valve opening temperature.





(a) Immerse the water inlet with thermostat in water and gradually heat the water.
(b) Check the valve opening temperature.
Standard valve opening temperature: 80 to 84°C (176 to 183°F)
If the valve opening temperature is not within the specified range, replace the water inlet subassembly with thermostat.





(c) Check the valve lift.
Standard valve lift: 8.0 mm (0.315 in.) or more at 95°C (203°F)
If the valve lift is not as specified, replace the water inlet sub-assembly with thermostat.
(d) Check that the valve is fully closed when the water inlet with thermostat is at a low temperature (below 40°C (104°F)).
If not close, replace the water inlet sub-assembly with thermostat.

INSTALLATION





1. INSTALL WATER INLET SUB-ASSEMBLY WITH THERMOSTAT
(a) Install a new gasket and the water inlet with thermostat with the 3 nuts.
Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)

2. CONNECT NO. 2 RADIATOR HOSE
3. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
4. ADD ENGINE COOLANT
5. INSPECT FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAK
6. INSTALL V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
7. INSTALL NO. 1 AIR CLEANER INLET
8. INSTALL COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL
9. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER (for 2WD)
10. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER (for 4WD)
11. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
(a) Perform initialization.

NOTICE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
