Rear Drive Shaft Assy





OVERHAUL

HINT:
- Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
- The procedures listed below are for the LH side.
- A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart.

1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT
a) Remove the cotter pin and lock cap.
b) While depressing the brake pedal, remove the nut.
3. DISCONECT REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
a) Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the rear disc brake caliper assembly.

NOTICE: Use a wire or an equivalent to keep the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.

4. REMOVE REAR DISC
5. DISCONNECT SPEED SENSOR REAR LH
6. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY
7. DISCONNECT PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY NO.3
a) Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the cable.
8. DISCONNECT TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY
9. DISCONNECT REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.1
10. DISCONNECT UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR LH
11. DISCONNECT REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.2
12. REMOVE REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE LH
a) Remove the 2 bolts and brace.
13. DISCONNECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a) Push the rear axle carrier toward the outside of the vehicle. Using a plastic hammer, separate the rear drive shaft assembly from the rear axle carrier.

NOTICE:
- Be careful not to damage the joint boot and speed sensor.
- Do not push out the rear axle carrier excessively.
- Use a wire or an equivalent to keep the rear drive shaft assembly from hanging down.

14. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY




a) Using SST, remove the rear drive shaft assembly.
SST 09520-01010, 09520-24010 (09520-32040)

NOTICE:
- Be careful not to damage the oil seal, inboard joint boot and dirve shaft dust cover.
- Be cafeful not to drop the drive shaft assembly.





HINT: With the drive shaft removed, do not lower the vehicle to the ground as damage may occur to the axle bearing. If the vehicle must be moved, use SST to lock the axle bearing.
SST 09608-16042 (09608-02021, 09608-02041)

15. INSPECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH




a) Check that operation of the joint is smooth within the sliding range in the axial direction.

HINT: If a large angle is used for the cross-groove type joint, the joint will feel like it is catching, but this is not a defect.

b) Check that the boots are not cracked, damaged or leaking.
c) Check that there are no scratches on the speed sensor rotor.

16. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
a) Coat the spline of the inboard joint shaft assembly with gear oil.
b) Set the shaft snap ring with the opening side facing down.




c) Align the shaft splines and install the dirve shaft assembly with a brass bar and hammer.

NOTICE:
- Be careful not to damage the drive shaft dust cover, boot and oil seal.
- Move the drive shaft assembly while keeping it level.

HINT: Whether the inboard joint shaft is in contact with the pinion shaft or not can be known from the sound or feeling when driving it in.

d) Install the rear drive shaft assembly to the rear axle carrier.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the drive shaft boot.

17. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.2
18. INSTALL REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE LH
a) Install the brace with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 50 N-m (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft-lbf)
19. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR LH
20. CONNECT TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
21. FULLY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR LH
22. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.1
23. CONNECT PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY NO.3
a) Connect the cable with the 2 bolts.
24. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY
25. INSTALL REAR DISC
26. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
27. CONNECT REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
a) Connect the rear disc brake caliper with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 104 N-m (1,061 kgf-cm, 77 ft-lbf)
28. CONNECT SPEED SENSOR REAR LH
29. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT
a) While depressing the brake pedal, install the nut.
Torque: 289 N-m (2,947 kgf-cm, 213 ft-lbf)
b) Install the lock cap and a new cotter pin.
30. STABLIZE SUSPENSION
31. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.2
32. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.1
33. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
a) Install the wheel with the 5 nuts.
Torque: 103 N-m (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf)
34. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
35. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
