Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair

Spiral Cable Sub-Assy:






REPLACEMENT

1. PRECAUTION
Refer to Air Bag Systems; Service Precautions.
2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

3. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO. 2
5. REMOVE SWITCH & VOLUME CASE
6. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR
7. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
8. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
9. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY




10. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER
a. Remove the 3 screws and steering column cover.




11. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Slide the column upper cover.
b. Disconnect the airbag connectors from the spiral cable.

NOTE: When handling the airbag connector, do not damage the airbag wire harness.

c. Release the 3 claws and remove the spiral cable.

12. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
a. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.

13. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Set the turn signal switch to the neutral position.

NOTE: Make sure that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position or the pin of the turn signal switch may be snapped.

b. Engage the 3 claws and install the spiral cable.

NOTE: When replacing the spiral cable with a new one, remove the lock pin before installing the steering wheel.

c. Connect the airbag connector to the spiral cable.

14. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER LOWER
a. Install the steering column lower cover with the 3 screws.

15. INSPECT SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. If the following condition is identified, replace the spiral cable with new one.
Condition:
Scratches or cracks on connector
Cracks, dents or chips in spiral cable

16. POSITION SPIRAL CABLE
a. Check that the ignition switch is OFF.




b. Rotate the spiral cable counterclockwise slowly by hand until it feels firm.

NOTE: Do not use the airbag wire harness to turn the spiral cable.




c. Rotate the spiral cable clockwise approximately 2.5 turns to align the marks.

NOTE: Do not use the airbag wire harness to turn the spiral cable.

HINT: The spiral cable will rotate approximately 2.5 turns to both the left and right from the center.

17. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
18. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
19. INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
20. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
21. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
22. PERFORM INITIALIZATION

NOTE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

23. INSPECT SRS WARNING LAMP
