Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair


















REAR DRIVE SHAFT
REPLACEMENT
1. REMOVE REAR TIRE





2. SEPARATE HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY REAR
a. Place matchmarks on the height control sensor link and bracket.
b. Remove the nut from the height control sensor link.





3. REMOVE REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH
a. Remove the nut, and separate the stabilizer link assembly LH.

HINT: If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon wrench (6 mm) to hold the stud.





4. REMOVE DIFFERENTIAL SUPPORT PROTECTOR NO.2
a. Remove the 3 nuts, and differential support protector No. 2.





5. REMOVE REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE LH
a. Remove the 2 bolts, and suspension member brace.





6. SEPARATE PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY NO.3
a. Remove the 2 bolts, and separate the parking brake cable No.3 from body.





7. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT
a. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap.
b. While depressing the brake pedal, remove the nut.





8. SEPARATE SPEED SENSOR REAR LH
a. Remove the bolt and separate the speed sensor from the rear axle carrier.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.





9. REMOVE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH
a. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the rear brake caliper from the rear axle carrier.
10. REMOVE REAR DISC





11. SEPARATE TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
a. Remove the nut.
b. Using SST, disconnect the toe control link from the axle carrier.

12. SEPARATE SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY REAR LH
a. Remove the nut and disconnect the shock absorber arm from the axle carrier.





13. SEPARATE UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR LH
a. Loosen the nut to the top line of the bolt.

HINT: Do not remove the nut.

b. Using SST, disconnect the upper control arm assembly from the axle carrier.

14. SEPARATE REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.2 LH
a. Remove the nut.
b. Using SST, disconnect the suspension arm No.2 from the axle carrier.

15. DISCONNECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH
a. Using a plastic hammer, separate the drive shaft from the axle hub.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the boot and speed sensor rotor.

b. Remove the nut, and separate the upper control arm assembly.





16. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH
a. Using SST, remove the rear drive shaft assembly LH.
SST 09520-01010, 09520-24010 (09520-32040)

NOTICE:
^ Be careful not to damage the oil seal, inboard joint boot and drive shaft dust cover.
^ Be careful not to drop the drive shaft assembly.

17. INSPECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH
a. Check that there is no excessive play in the outboard joint.
b. Check if the inboard joint slides smoothly in the thrust direction.
c. Check that there is no excessive play in the radial direction of the inboard joint.
d. Check the boots for damage.

NOTICE: Keep the drive shaft assembly level during inspection.





18. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH
a. Coat the spline of the inboard joint shaft assembly with gear oil.
b. Align the shaft splines, install the drive shaft assembly LH with a brass bar and a hammer.

NOTICE:
^ Set the hole snap ring with the opening side facing down.
^ Be careful not to damage the boot and the oil seal.

HINT: Whether the inboard joint shaft is in contact with the pinion shaft or not can be known from the sound or feeling when driving it in.

c. Install the drive shaft assembly LH to the rear axle assembly LH.





19. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR LH
a. Temporarily tighten the upper control arm assembly LH with a new nut.





20. INSTALL SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY REAR LH
a. Install the shock absorber assembly LH with the new nut.
Torque: 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.)





21. INSTALL REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO.2 LH
a. Install the rear suspension arm assembly No.2 LH with the new nut.
Torque: 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.)





22. INSTALL TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
a. Install the toe control link assembly LH with the new nut.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)





23. FULLY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR LH
a. Support the rear axle carrier.
b. Fully tighten the upper control arm assembly LH with the nut.
Torque: 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.)
24. INSTALL REAR DISC





25. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH
a. Install the brake caliper with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 78 Nm (800 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.)





26. INSTALL SPEED SENSOR REAR LH
a. Install the speed sensor to the rear axle carrier with the bolt.
Torque: 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.)

NOTICE: Prevent foreign matter from adhering to the speed sensor.





27. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT
a. While applying brakes, use a socket wrench (32 mm) to install the nut.
Torque: 290 Nm, (2,960 kgf-cm, 214 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the lock cap and a new cotter pin.
If the holes for the cotter pin are not aligned, tighten the nut a further 10°.





28. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY NO.3
a. Install the parking brake cable assembly to the body with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.)





29. INSTALL REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE LH
a. Install the rear suspension member brace to the body with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)





30. INSTALL DIFFERENTIAL SUPPORT PROTECTOR NO.2
a. Install the differential support protector No.2 to the body with the 3 nuts.
Torque: 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.)





31. INSTALL REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH
a. Install the stabilizer link assembly LH with the nut.
Torque: 65 Nm (663 kgf-cm, 48 ft. lbs.)

HINT: If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon (6 mm) wrench to hold the stud.





32. INSTALL HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY REAR
a. Align the matchmarks and connect the height control sensor link to the rear suspension arm assembly No.2 LH.
b. Install and torque the 6 bolts, washers and nuts.
Torque: 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.)
33. INSTALL REAR TIRE
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
34. ADJUST VEHICLE HEIGHT (W/ AIR SUSPENSION)
35. INSPECT HEADLIGHT AIM ONLY
36. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
37. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
