Parking Brake Pedal: Service and Repair

PARKING BRAKE PEDAL

COMPONENTS:

REMOVAL
1. PRECAUTION

CAUTION: Be sure to read the PRECAUTION thoroughly before servicing.

2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

CAUTION: Wait for 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable to prevent the airbag working.

3. REMOVE FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY (for Power Seat)
4. REMOVE FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY (for Manual Seat)
5. REMOVE REAR SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY
6. DISCONNECT FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY
7. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
8. REMOVE REAR DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
9. REMOVE CENTER LOWER PILLAR GARNISH LH
10. REMOVE FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH
11. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSEMBLY
12. REMOVE NO. 1 UPPER CONSOLE PANEL GARNISH
13. REMOVE NO. 2 UPPER CONSOLE PANEL GARNISH
14. REMOVE CONSOLE PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
15. REMOVE FRONT ASH RECEPTACLE ASSEMBLY
16. REMOVE CONSOLE BOX REGISTER ASSEMBLY
17. REMOVE CONSOLE BOX
18. REMOVE SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL LH
19. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
20. REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT FINISH PANEL SUBASSEMBLY
21. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
22. REMOVE ACCELERATOR PEDAL (for 2WD)
23. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR SILENCER PAD (for 2WD)
24. REMOVE NO. 2 REAR AIR DUCT
25. REMOVE FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
26. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 2GR-FSE)
27. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 4GR-FSE)
28. REMOVE NO. 3 DASH PANEL INSULATOR PAD
29. REMOVE CENTER AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY

30. REMOVE FRONT UPPER FLOOR REAR SUB PANEL
a. Turn back the floor carpet in order to remove the front floor rear upper sub panel.
b. Disengage the 6 clamps.
c. Remove the 4 bolts and front floor rear upper sub panel.
31. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)

a. Remove the parking brake return with damper spring.

b. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the 2 No. 2 parking brake cable assemblies from the parking brake equalizer.

c. Slide the rubber boot as shown in the illustration.

d. Remove the parking brake equalizer from the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly.

e. Remove the 2 bolts and 3 nuts, and separate the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly from the body.

f. Remove the 2 nuts and separate the instrument panel junction block assembly.

g. Disconnect the parking brake switch connector.
h. Remove the 3 nuts and parking brake pedal from the body.

i. Pull up the parking brake pedal claw.
j. Remove the lock nut and No. 1 wire adjusting nut of the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly from the parking brake pedal.
k. Remove the clip and No. 1 parking brake cable assembly from the parking brake pedal.
32. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)

a. Remove the parking brake return with damper spring.

b. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the 2 No. 2 parking brake cable assemblies from the parking brake equalizer.

c. Slide the rubber boot as shown in the illustration.

d. Remove the parking brake equalizer from the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly.

e. Remove the 2 bolts and 3 nuts, and separate the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly from the body.

f. Remove the 2 nuts and separate the instrument panel junction block assembly.

g. Disconnect the parking brake switch connector.
h. Remove the 3 nuts and parking brake pedal from the body.

33. REMOVE PARKING PEDAL PAD
a. Disengage the claw and remove the perking pedal pad from the parking brake pedal.

INSTALLATION

1. INSTALL PARKING PEDAL PAD
a. Engage the claw and install the parking pedal pad on the parking brake pedal.
2. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)

a. Pass the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly through the parking brake pedal and hold the cable with the clip.

HINT: Fully tighten the No. 1 wire adjusting nut and lock nut when adjusting the parking brake pedal free play.

b. Fully bend the parking brake pedal claw.

c. Temporarily install the parking brake pedal by loosely tightening the 3 nuts.
d. Fully tighten the 3 nuts in the order shown in the illustration.
Torque: 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)
e. Connect the parking brake switch connector.

f. Install the instrument panel junction block assembly with the 2 nuts.

g. Install the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly to the body with the 3 nuts and 2 bolts.
Torque:
Nut 6.0 Nm (61 kgf-cm, 53 inch lbs.)
Bolt 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.)

h. Install the parking brake equalizer to the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly.

i. Slide the rubber boot back as shown in the illustration.

j. Connect the 2 No. 2 parking brake cable assemblies to the parking brake equalizer.
k. Install the 2 No. 2 parking brake cable assemblies with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 6.0 Nm (61 kgf-cm, 53 inch lbs.)

l. Install the parking brake return with damper spring.
3. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)

f. Install the instrument panel junction block assembly with the 2 nuts.

g. Install the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly to the body with the 3 nuts and 2 bolts.
Torque:
Nut 6.0 Nm (61 kgf-cm, 53 inch lbs.)
Bolt 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.)

h. Install the parking brake equalizer to the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly.

i. Slide the rubber boot back as shown in the illustration.

l. Install the parking brake return with damper spring.

4. INSTALL FRONT UPPER FLOOR REAR SUB PANEL
a. Install the front floor rear upper sub panel with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 18 Nm (184 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.)
b. Engage the 6 clamps.
5. INSTALL CENTER AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY
6. INSTALL NO. 3 DASH PANEL INSULATOR PAD
7. INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 2GR-FSE)
8. INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY (for 4GR-FSE)
9. INSTALL FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
10. INSTALL NO. 2 REAR AIR DUCT
11. INSTALL FRONT FLOOR SILENCER PAD (for 2WD)
12. INSTALL ACCELERATOR PEDAL (for 2WD)
13. INSTALL DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY
14. INSTALL LOWER INSTRUMENT FINISH PANEL SUBASSEMBLY
15. INSTALL NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
16. INSTALL SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL LH
17. INSTALL CONSOLE BOX
18. INSTALL CONSOLE BOX REGISTER ASSEMBLY
19. INSTALL FRONT ASH RECEPTACLE ASSEMBLY
20. INSTALL CONSOLE PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
21. INSTALL NO. 1 UPPER CONSOLE PANEL GARNISH
22. INSTALL NO. 2 UPPER CONSOLE PANEL GARNISH

23. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Turn the shift knob clockwise and install the shift lever knob sub-assembly.
24. INSTALL CENTER LOWER PILLAR GARNISH LX
25. INSTALL REAR DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
26. INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
27. INSTALL FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH
28. INSTALL FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY
29. INSTALL REAR SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY
30. INSTALL FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY (for Power Seat)
31. INSTALL FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY (for Manual Seat)
32. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
Torque: 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.)
33. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
34. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
35. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
36. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
37. INSPECT FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY (for Power Seat)
38. CHECK FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAKS
