Differential Oil Service
DIFFERENTIAL OIL ADJUSTMENT1. INSPECT FRONT DIFFERENTIAL OIL (for 4WD)
a. Stop the vehicle on a level place.
b. Remove the differential filler plug and gasket.
c. Check that the oil surface is within 5 mm (0.20 inch) of the lowest position of the inner surface of the differential filler plug opening.
NOTICE:
^ Excessively large or small amounts of oil may cause trouble.
^ After replacing oil, drive the vehicle and check the oil level.
HINT: If necessary, fill the front differential carrier with hypoid gear oil.
d. Check for oil leakage when the oil level is low.
e. Install the differential filler plug and a new gasket.
Torque: 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.)
2. INSPECT REAR DIFFERENTIAL OIL (for 3GR-FSE)
a. Stop the vehicle on a level place.
b. Using a hexagon wrench (10 mm), remove the differential filler plug and gasket.
c. Check that the oil surface is within 5 mm (0.20 inch) of the lowest position of the inner surface of the differential filler plug opening.
NOTICE:
^ Excessively large or small amounts of oil may cause trouble.
^ After replacing oil, drive the vehicle and check the oil level.
HINT: If necessary, fill the rear differential carrier with hypoid gear oil.
d. Check for oil leakage when the oil level is low.
e. Using a hexagon wrench (10 mm), install the differential filler plug and a new gasket.
Torque: 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.)
3. INSPECT REAR DIFFERENTIAL OIL (for 3UZ-FE)
a. Stop the vehicle on a level place.
b. Using a hexagon wrench (10 mm), remove the differential filler plug and gasket.
c. Check that the oil surface is within 5 mm (0.20 inch) of the lowest position of the inner surface of the differential filler plug opening.
NOTICE:
^ Excessively large or small amounts of oil may cause trouble.
^ After replacing oil, drive the vehicle and check the oil level.
HINT: If necessary, fill the rear differential carrier with differential synthetic gear oil.
d. Check for oil leakage when the oil level is low.
e. Using a hexagon wrench (10 mm), install the differential filler plug and a new gasket.
Torque: 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.)
4. ADD FRONT DIFFERENTIAL OIL (for 4WD)
a. Remove the differential filler plug and gasket.
b. Add oil.
Capacity: 0.65 to 0.75 liter (0.69 to 0.79 US qts, 0.57 to 0.66 Imp. qts)
Oil grade: Hypoid gear oil API GL-5 or equivalent
Recommended Oil Viscosity:
c. Check the oil level.
d. Install the differential filler plug and a new gasket.
Torque: 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: After replacing the oil, recheck the oil level after driving.
5. ADD REAR DIFFERENTIAL OIL (for 3GR-FSE)
a. Using a hexagon wrench (10 mm), remove the differential filler plug and gasket.
b. Add oil.
Capacity:
2WD: 1.10 to 1.20 liter (1.17 to 1.27 US qts, 0.97 to 1.05 Imp. qts)
4WD: 1.00 to 1.10 liter (1.06 to 1.17 US qts, 0.88 to 0.97 Imp. qts)
Oil grade: Hypoid gear oil API GL-5 or equivalent
Recommended Oil Viscosity:
c. Check the oil level.
d. Using a hexagon wrench (10mm), install the differential filler plug with a new gasket.
Torque: 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: After replacing the oil, recheck the oil level after driving.
6. ADD REAR DIFFERENTIAL OIL (for 3UZ-FE)
a. Using a hexagon wrench (10 mm), remove the differential filler plug and gasket.
b. Add oil.
Capacity: 1.30 to 1.40 liter (1.38 to 1.48 US qts, 1.15 to 1.23 Imp. qts)
Oil grade: Differential synthetic gear oil GL-5 75W-90 or equivalent
c. Check the oil level.
d. Using a hexagon wrench (10mm), install the differential filler plug with a new gasket.
Torque: 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: After replacing the oil, recheck the oil level after driving.
