Steering Column: Service and Repair

STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY (for 3GR-FSE)

REMOVAL
1. PRECAUTION
2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
4. REMOVE CONSOLE UPPER PANEL GARNISH FRONT
5. REMOVE CONSOLE UPPER PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
6. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL END LH
7. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
8. REMOVE FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH
9. REMOVE INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH
10. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY NO. 1
11. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY NO. 1
12. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY LOWER NO. 1
13. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO. 2
14. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO. 3
15. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD





16. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
b. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
c. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05011)

17. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER





a. Remove the 3 screws.
b. Disengage the 2 claws to remove the steering column cover lower.

NOTICE: Do not damage the tilt & telescopic switch.





c. Disengage the 4 clips to separate the steering column cover upper.
d. Disengage the claw to remove the steering column cover upper.





18. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Using a screwdriver, disengage the claw and pull out the tilt and telescopic switch.

NOTICE: Pushing on the claw too hard will break the claw.

HINT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use.





19. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the clamp and turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.

20. REMOVE AIR DUCT NO. 1
a. Disengage the 2 claws and remove the air duct No. 1.

21. SEPARATE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY NO. 2 (for 2WD)





a. Loosen bolt (A) and remove bolt (B), then slide the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2.

HINT:
^ Do not remove bolt (A).
^ Do not disconnect the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2 from the power steering link assembly.





b. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke subassembly and the power steering link assembly.
c. Separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the power steering link assembly.





d. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke subassembly and the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2.
e. Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke subassembly from the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2.

22. SEPARATE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY NO. 2 (for 4WD)





a. Remove the bolt, and then slide the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2.

HINT: Do not disconnect the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2 from the power steering link assembly.





b. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2 and the power steering link assembly.
c. Separate the intermediate shaft assembly No. 2 from the power steering link assembly.

23. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY





a. Remove the bolt and separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2.
b. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps.





c. Remove the 4 nuts and steering column assembly from the instrument panel reinforcement assembly.





24. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY NO. 2
a. Remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.
b. Remove the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2.

DISASSEMBLY





1. REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
a. Using a center punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
b. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 inch) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolts.
c. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering lock actuator assembly from the steering column assembly.

2. REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU

REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU





2. INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY
a. Temporarily install the steering lock actuator assembly with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
b. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.

INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY NO. 2
a. Install the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2.





2. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
a. Install the steering column assembly with the 4 nuts.
Torque: 26 Nm (260 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.)
b. Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps to the steering column assembly
c. Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke assembly and power steering link assembly
d. Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)

3. CONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY NO. 2





a. Connect the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2 to the steering main shaft.
b. Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)





c. Install the clamp to the steering column hole shield.

4. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)





a. Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly No. 2 and steering sliding yoke subassembly.
b. Temporarily install the bolt.

HINT: Do not tighten the bolt.





c. Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the power steering link assembly.





d. Install bolt (A) and tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)

5. CONNECT STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY NO. 2 (for 4WD)





a. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft assembly No. 2 and the power steering link assembly.





b. Install the bolt.
Torque: 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.)

6. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD





7. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly to the steering column assembly with the clamp.





8. INSTALL TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
a. Engage the claw to install the tilt and telescopic switch.
b. Connect the connector.

9. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER





a. Engage the 4 clips to install the steering column cover upper onto the instrument panel cluster finish panel.
b. Engage the claw to install the steering column cover upper.





c. Engage the 2 claws to install the steering column cover lower.

NOTICE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch,

d. Using a socket wrench (+), install the 3 screws.
Torque: 2.0 Nm (20 kgf-cm, 18 inch lbs.)

10. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB- ASSEMBLY
11. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
a. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft assembly.
b. Install the steering wheel assembly set nut.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)

12. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
13. INSTALL AIR DUCT NO. 1
a. Engage the 2 claws to install the air duct No. 1.

14. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY LOWER NO. 1
15. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY NO. 1
16. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY NO. 1
17. INSTALL INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH
18. INSTALL FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH
19. INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
20. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL END LH
21. INSTALL CONSOLE UPPER PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
22. INSTALL CONSOLE UPPER PANEL GARNISH FRONT
23. INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSEMBLY
24. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL PAD
25. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO. 3
26. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO. 2
27. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
28. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
29. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
Some systems need initialization when disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal.
