Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair
PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCHCOMPONENTS:
ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Apply the parking brake and engine switch on (IG).
b. Depress the brake pedal and check that the engine starts when the shift lever is set in the N or P position, but does not start in other positions.
c. Check that the back-up light comes on and the reverse warning buzzer sounds when the shift lever is set in the R position, but do not function in other positions. If a failure is found, check the park/neutral position switch for continuity.
REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER AIR GUIDE BRACKET
3. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
4. REMOVE PROPELLER W/CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSEMBLY
5. SEPARATE FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY
6. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY
7. SEPARATE ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER
8. REMOVE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
b. Remove the nut and transmission control shaft lever RH.
c. Using a screwdriver, pry out the lock washer.
d. Remove the lock nut and lock washer.
e. Remove the bolt and park/neutral position switch.
INSPECTION
1. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Measure resistance according to the value(s) in the table when the shift lever is moved to each position.
Standard Resistance:
ADJUSTMENT
1. ADJUST PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Loosen the bolt of the park/neutral position switch and move the shift lever to the N position.
b. Align the groove and the neutral basic line.
c. Hold the switch in position and tighten the bolt.
Torque: 13 Nm (1133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)
d. After adjustment, perform the resistance inspection.
INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL NEUTRAL START SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Install the park/neutral position switch to the manual valve shaft.
b. Temporarily install the bolt.
c. Install a new lock washer and the nut.
Torque: 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.)
d. Temporarily install the control shaft lever.
e. Turn the control shaft lever counterclockwise until it stops, and turn it clockwise 2 notches to set it to the N position.
f. Remove the transmission control shaft lever.
g. Align the neutral basic line with the switch groove, and tighten the adjusting bolt.
Torque: 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
h. Using a screwdriver, bend the tabs of the lock washer.
i. Install the transmission control shaft lever RH with the nut.
Torque: 16 Nm (163 kgf-cm, 12 ft. lbs.)
j. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.
2. INSTALL ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER
3. INSTALL FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUBASSEMBLY
4. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
5. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION
6. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION
7. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
8. INSTALL PROPELLER W/CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSEMBLY
9. INSTALL FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
10. INSTALL ENGINE UNDERCOVER AIR GUIDE BRACKET
11. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID
12. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER NO. 2
13. CHECK FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAKS
14. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
