Water Pump: Service and Repair

WATER PUMP

Components:

REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
3. REMOVE COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL
4. REMOVE NO.1 AIR CLEANER INLET
a. Remove the bolt and inlet.

5. REMOVE V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 nuts and cover.

6. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
7. REMOVE V-RIBBED BELT

8. REMOVE WATER PUMP PULLEY
a. Using SST, hold the water pump pulley.
SST 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00700)
b. Remove the 4 bolts and water pump pulley.

9. REMOVE NO.2 ENGINE COVER
a. Remove the 3 nuts and cover.

10. REMOVE NO.1 ENGINE COVER
11. REMOVE INJECTOR DRIVER

12. REMOVE WATER INLET ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the 2 radiator hoses.

b. Disconnect the 5 hoses.

c. Remove the 4 bolts, nut and water inlet.

d. Remove the water inlet housing gasket and water outlet pipe's O-ring.

13. REMOVE NO.2 IDLER PULLEY SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the bolt, cover plate and idler pulley.
b. Remove the bolt, cover plate and belt tensioner pulley (marking: L).

CAUTION: Do not turn the bolt L counterclockwise.

14. REMOVE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 16 bolts, water pump and gasket.

INSTALLATION

1. INSTALL WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY
a. Install a new gasket and the water pump with the 16 bolts.
Torque: 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) for bolt A 9.1 Nm (93 kgf-cm, 81 inch lbs.) for bolts B and C

NOTICE:
^ Be sure to replace the 2 C bolts with new ones or reuse them after applying adhesive 1344.
^ Make sure that there is no oil on the threads of bolt A.

2. INSTALL NO.2 IDLER PULLEY SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the V-ribbed belt tensioner pulley and cover plate with the bolt.
Torque: 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)

CAUTION: Be careful when tightening the bolt because it is left-hand threaded.

b. Install the pulley and cover plate with the bolt.
Torque: 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)

3. INSTALL WATER INLET ASSEMBLY
a. Install anew gasket to the water inlet housing.
b. Install a new O-ring to the water outlet pipe.

c. Install the water inlet with the 4 bolts and nut.
Torque: 10 Nm (192 kgf-cm, 7 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Be careful not to allow the O-ring to get caught between other parts.

d. Connect the 5 hoses.

e. Connect the 2 radiator hoses.

4. ADD ENGINE COOLANT
5. CHECK FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAKS
a. Check for engine coolant leaks.

6. INSTALL WATER PUMP PULLEY
a. Temporarily install the pulley with the 4 bolts.
b. Using SST, hold the pulley and tighten the 4 bolts.
SST 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00700)
Torque: 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)

7. INSTALL INJECTOR DRIVER
8. INSTALL NO.1 ENGINE COVER

9. INSTALL NO.2 ENGINE COVER
a. Install the cover with the 3 nuts.

10. INSTALL V-RIBBED BELT
11. INSTALL V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the cover with the 2 nuts.
Torque: 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 ft. lbs.)

12. INSTALL NO.1 AIR CLEANER INLET
a. Install the inlet with the bolt.
Torque: 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.)

13. INSTALL COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL
14. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER
15. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
16. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
a. Perform initialization.

NOTICE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
