Parking Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLYComponents:
DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the rear disc brake caliper assembly.
NOTICE: Hang the caliper with wire or equivalent.
b. Remove the caliper No.1 plate (2 pieces).
3. REMOVE REAR DISC
a. Release the parking brake.
b. Put matchmarks on the rear disc and rear axle hub.
c. Remove the rear disc.
HINT: If the disc cannot be removed easily, turn the shoe adjuster until the wheel turns smoothly
4. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN NO.2 SPRING
a. Using SST, remove the parking brake shoe return No.2 spring.

5. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN NO.1 SPRING
a. Using SST, remove the parking brake shoe return No.1 spring.

6. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
a. Slide the parking brake shoe, and remove the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.
7. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE NO.1 SHOE ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST, remove the shoe hold down spring No.1 cup, compression No.1 spring and shoe hold down spring No.1 pin.

b. Remove the parking brake No.1 shoe assembly.
8. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE NO.2 SHOE ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST, remove the shoe hold down spring No.1 cup, compression No.1 spring and shoe hold down spring No.1 pin.

b. Remove the parking brake No.2 shoe assembly.
HINT: Use the service hole to retain the hold down spring No.1 pin with your finger.
9. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
10. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE ANCHOR BLOCK
a. Remove the rear axle hub and bearing assembly.
b. Remove the 2 nuts and parking brake anchor block.
INSPECTION
1. INSPECT BRAKE DISC INSIDE DIAMETER
a. Using a brake drum gauge or equivalent tool, measure the inside diameter of the disc.
Standard inside diameter: 190 mm (7.48 inch)
Maximum inside diameter: 191 mm (7.52 inch)
If the inside diameter is more than the maximum, replace the disc.
2. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE SHOE LINING THICKNESS
a. Using a ruler, measure the thickness of the shoe lining.
Standard thickness: 2.5 mm (0.098 inch)
Minimum thickness: 1.0 mm (0.039 inch)
If the lining thickness is less than the minimum, or if there is severe or uneven wear, replace the brake shoe.
NOTICE: Always replace both the right and left parking brake shoes together.
3. INSPECT BRAKE DISC AND PARKING BRAKE SHOE LINING FOR PROPER CONTACT
a. Apply chalk to the inside surface of the disc, then grind down the brake shoe lining to fit the disc. If the contact between the disc and the brake shoe lining is improper, repair it using a brake shoe grinder or replace the brake shoe.
REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE ANCHOR BLOCK
a. Install the parking brake anchor block with 2 nuts.
Torque: 76 Nm (775 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the rear axle hub and bearing assembly.
2. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE
a. Apply a thin layer of high temperature grease to the area where the parking brake plate contacts the parking brake shoe.
3. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
a. Apply a thin layer of high temperature grease to the area where the parking brake shoe lever contacts the parking brake anchor block.
b. Install the parking brake shoe lever to the parking brake cable assembly.
NOTICE: Take care to install the correct parking brake shoe lever because the direction of the pin is different between left and right.
4. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE NO.2 SHOE ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST, install the parking brake No.2 shoe assembly with the shoe hold down spring No.1 cup, compression No.1 spring and shoe hold down spring No.1 pin.

HINT: Use the service hole to retain the shoe hold down spring No.1 pin with your finger.
5. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE NO.1 SHOE ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST, install the parking brake No.1 shoe assembly with the shoe hold down spring No.1 cup, compression No.1 spring and shoe hold down spring No.1 pin.

6. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
a. Apply high temperature grease to the thread and all joining areas of the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.
b. Install the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.
7. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN NO.1 SPRING
a. Install the parking brake shoe return No.1 spring.
8. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN NO.2 SPRING
a. Install the parking brake shoe return No.2 spring.
9. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION
a. Make sure that all the parts are installed properly If necessary, reinstall properly
10. INSTALL REAR DISC
a. Align the matchmarks on the rear disc and rear axle hub.
11. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
12. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
a. Install the rear disc brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts and 2 new caliper No.1 plates.
Torque: 54 Nm (550 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE:
^ Do not twist the brake hose.
^ Make sure that the bolts are free from damage and foreign matter.
^ Do not overtighten the bolts.
13. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
14. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
15. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
