Laser Beam Axis Adjustment

NOTE: This article contains changes called out by TSB# EL011-05 (REVISED).

INTRODUCTION
When the laser cruise control sensor is removed from the vehicle for trouble diagnosis or repair, it is necessary to adjust the laser beam axis after the operation. Use the following procedure to perform laser cruise control beam axis adjustments.

ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

HINT:
- Since the laser sensor is installed in the bumper reinforcement, it is important that the laser sensor, bumper reinforcement, etc., are installed properly.
- The sensor and bracket are a matched set and must be replaced as an assembly. If the sensor is removed from the matched bracket, the adjustment may be affected.
- Please ensure that the battery is disconnected prior to laser radar sensor disconnect.





NOTE:
- Perform measurement indoors on level ground and in front of a blank wall. Park the vehicle at least 9 m (29.5 ft) from the wall. When performing adjustment outdoors, make sure that it is NOT raining or snowing.
- Check that there are no reflective materials in the surroundings or on the ground. If you cannot secure a distance of about 9 m (29.5 ft) in front of the vehicle, be sure to secure at least 7 m (23 ft) from the vehicle and cover the area marked [A] with a black cloth. If NOT covered with a black cloth, the laser sensor may detect something other than the target and it will fail to adjust properly.

1. Preparation for Adjusting the Laser Beam Axis:
A. Adjust the tire pressure properly.
- Refer to the tire pressure information label located in the door jamb for proper tire inflation or refer to the Owner's Manual.
B. Luggage in the vehicle, such as in the trunk, should be unloaded.
C. Clean the light-luminous and light-receiving portions of the laser sensor.
D. Prepare a 10 m (33 ft) string, a string with a sharp-pointed weight, and a 5 m (25 ft standard) tape measure.

2. Reflector (SST) Placement:




A. Measure the height to the center of the laser luminous portion, as shown in the illustration.




B. Adjust the center height of the reflector 48 mm (1-7/8 in.) higher than the measurement taken for the center of the luminous portion of the laser sensor.
- SST P/N: 09870-60000

NOTE: Adjust the height as precisely as possible.

C. From the center of the front (center of the emblem) and rear bumpers, hang down the sharp-pointed weight and mark the center points of the vehicle on the ground (both front and rear).




D. Fix one end of the string to the rear center mark and adjust the other end so that the string will line up with the front center mark of the vehicle. Make a mark 5 m (16.5 ft) from the front of the vehicle where the string and the front vehicle center mark intersect.




E. From the 5 m (16.5 ft) marked position, measure an offset distance of 350 mm (13.75 in.) to the right and place the reflector there.

NOTE: Perform the reflector placement as precisely as possible.




3. Laser Cruise Flag (L/C Option Flag) Setting:
A. Connect the Diagnostic Tester to DLC3 and turn the power ON.
B. Operate by following the screen menus, select "DATA LIST" from the Laser Cruise Menu and then press "ENTER."
C. Review the Data List setting for L/C OPTION FLAG."
D. If the "L/C OPTION FLAG" is set to YES", please proceed to step 4.
E. If the "L/C OPTION FLAG" is set to "NO", perform the following option selection procedure:
a. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
b. Push the cruise control main switch button "ON."
c. Depress, and hold, the brake pedal.
d. Cycle the cruise control switch to the "+/RES" position 3 times within 3 seconds.

HINT: A beep sound should be heard from the vehicle when the L/C Option Flag selection has been performed correctly.

F. Once the L/C Option Flag selection has been performed correctly, verify the Data List display shows the "L/C OPTION FLAG" set to YES."

NOTE:
- If the L/C Option Flag is NOT set to "YES" in the Data List after performing the L/C Option Flag selection procedure and the beep is heard, perform the "INITIALIZATION" option from the "LASER CRUISE" menu on the Diagnostic Tester.
- Once the Diagnostic Tester has completed the initialization procedure, perform the L/C Option Flag selection procedure again as indicated above.





4. Laser Beam Axis Adjustment:
A. Turn the headlight switch to the "OFF" position.
B. Turn the ignition switch to ON."
C. Push the cruise control main switch button "ON."
D. Connect the Diagnostic Tester to DLC3 and turn the power ON.
E. Operate by following the screen menus shown, select "BEAM AXIS ADJUST" from the LASER CRUISE" menu, and then press "ENTER."

NOTE: The headlight switch must be in the "OFF" position before performing beam axis adjustment. If the light switch is in the TAIL, HEADLIGHT or "AUTO" position, the beam axis adjustment may fail.




F. Confirm the current value of the laser beam divergence angles.

NOTE: The default reading is "6.3" when the reflector is out of range.

G. Move the reflector either to the right or left by approximately 100 mm (4 in.), and check that both the "UPPER/LOWER SIDE" and the "LEFT/RIGHT SIDE" values are changing.

NOTE: When the angle values do NOT change:
- It is possible that the direction of the laser radar sensor is greatly off target and that the laser radar sensor is aiming at something different.
- Check the installation condition of the laser radar sensor and bumper reinforcement. Frontal damage to the vehicle may affect the aiming of the sensor.
- Move the reflector closer to the vehicle and from left to right until the angle values begin to fluctuate. Note the position in which the angle values began to fluctuate and recheck the installation of the laser radar sensor.




H. Return the reflector to the previously measured position and read the current angle. The angle values should be within the standard values listed below.

Standard Values for Divergence:
UPPER/LOWER SIDE: Below 2 degrees
RIGHT/LEFT SIDE: Below 4 degrees

NOTE: If any value is out of the range, check the installation condition of the bumper reinforcement, laser sensor bracket, etc., as it cannot be adjusted automatically.




I. Turn the headlight dimmer switch from the "OFF" position to the TAIL position (e.g., parking, tail, license plate, side marker, and instrument panel lights) while the "LASER CRUISE DIVERGENCE DATA" screen is still shown on the Diagnostic Tester. (Beam axis adjustment will be performed automatically.)
J. When the adjustment is completed, the "UPPER/LOWER SIDE" and RIGHT/LEFT SIDE" indicators show 0° and the system beeps for 10 seconds. During this time, UPPER" and "LOWER" flash alternately on the screen, and "LEFT" and "RIGHT" flash alternately on the screen.

NOTE: If the angle indicators do NOT show 0° and the system beep is NOT heard, verify that the current divergence angles are within the Standard Values for Divergence listed in the table in step 4H. If value is out of range, go to step 1 and repeat the adjustment procedure.
