The previous TSIB should be discarded.

Introduction

The "Smart Key" system is a truly keyless entry and ignition system made available for the LS 430. The following bulletin describes the operation of the system and clarifies normal operational parameters.

Applicable Vehicles

2004 - 2006 model year LS 430 vehicles with Smart Key option.

Warranty Information

Smart Key ENTRY

When unlocking the vehicle's doors using the Smart Key function, please note:

The system has been designed to have a two-step unlock process. To unlock the door:

1. Approach the vehicle (with a registered master key in your possession) and grasp the door handle.

2. After hearing the security system unlock confirmation, pull the handle open.

If the handle is pulled quickly (prior to the unlock confirmation), the door may NOT open on the first pull of the handle.

Smart Key RE-ENTRY After Locking

After the door has been closed and locked (by any method). Please note the following:

^ The Smart Key CANNOT be used to unlock the vehicle for 3 seconds after the doors are locked. This has been designed to allow customers to confirm that the door is actually locked by pulling the handle.

^ If the customer wishes to re-enter the vehicle before the 3-second time period has expired, the Remote Keyless Entry "UNLOCK" button can be used.

^ This time delay can be adjusted from 3 seconds, to 2, or 1 second through C-BEST, if desired.

Key Precautions

The Smart Key system has a unique key. Some important notes about this key include:

^ In some rare cases, equipment (located outside of the vehicle) operating on similar frequencies may affect the performance of the system. Should this occur, the Hard Key Shank (located within the Smart Key) can always be used to enter the vehicle, and the Smart Key can be inserted into the ignition cylinder to start the ignition.

^ Smart Key function is only available for Master Keys.

^ When using a sub-key, the standard operation is to use the remote keyless entry buttons to unlock the vehicle and then to insert the key into the ignition cylinder for ignition.

^ Placing the key in close proximity to a microwave oven may reduce key battery life.

If the System Does NOT Work (Quick Checks)

In the event that the Smart Key system does NOT work, a few key checks should be made before proceeding with diagnosis.

1. Check to see that the Smart Key system is ON (verify that the On/Off switch under the dash is in the "ON" position). The location is illustrated.

2. Verify that the key is a MASTER Key (with trunk release button below the "UNLOCK" button on the key). Sub-keys do NOT support Smart system functions. Illustrations of the Smart Key System keys can be found in this TSIB.

3. Verify that the conventional keyless entry system works (if NOT, check the key's battery voltage).

4. Move the vehicle to another location and try the functions again.

^ If none of the above corrects the condition, refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), applicable model year LS 430 Repair Manual: Diagnostics: Smart key System: Diagnosis System.
