Ball Joint: Service and Repair















LOWER BALL JOINT ASSY FRONT LH
REPLACEMENT

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ The procedures listed are for the LH side.

1. REMOVE FRONT WHEELS
2. SEPARATE FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSY LH
3. SEPARATE SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE
4. REMOVE DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSY LH
5. REMOVE FRONT DISC
6. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSY LH





7. REMOVE STEERING KNUCKLE LH
a. Remove the clip and castle nut.
b. Using SST, separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle LH.

8. SEPARATE TIE ROD ASSY LH
a. Remove the clip and castle nut.
b. Using SST, separate the tie rod end.

9. REMOVE LOWER BALL JOINT ASSY FRONT LH
a. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut.
b. Using SST, remove the front lower ball joint assy LH.

10. INSPECT LOWER BALL JOINT ASSY FRONT LH
a. As shown in the illustration, flip the ball joint stud back and forth 5 times before installing the nut.
b. Using a torque wrench, turn the nut continuously at a rate of 3 to 5 seconds per turn and take the torque reading on the 5th turn.
Turning torque: 0.5 to 3.5 Nm (5 to 36 kgf-cm, 4.5 to 31 inch lbs.)
If there is any abnormality, replace the lower ball joint assy front LH with a new one.
11. INSTALL LOWER BALL JOINT ASSY FRONT LH
a. Install the lower ball joint assy front LH to the lower suspension arm assy with the castle nut.
Torque: 162 Nm (1,645 kgf-cm, 119 ft. lbs.)
b. Install a new clip to the front suspension lower arm assy.

NOTICE: If the holes for the clip are not aligned, tighten the nut up to 60° further.

12. INSTALL TIE ROD ASSY LH
a. Install the tie rod end to the lower ball joint assy front LH with the castle nut.
Torque: 59 Nm (600 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs.)
b. Install a new clip to the lower ball joint assy front LH.

NOTICE: If the holes for the clip are not aligned, tighten the nut further up to 60°.

13. INSTALL STEERING KNUCKLE LH
a. Install the steering knuckle LH to the upper arm assy with the castle nut.
Torque: 87 Nm (885 kgf-cm, 64 inch lbs.)
b. Install a new cotter pin on the steering knuckle.

NOTICE: If the holes for the cotter pin are not aligned, tighten the nut up to 60° further.

14. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSY LH
15. INSTALL FRONT DISC
16. INSTALL DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSY LH
17. INSTALL SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE
18. INSTALL FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSY LH
19. INSTALL FRONT WHEELS
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
