Rear Drive Shaft LH Overhaul
OVERHAULHINT:
- COMPONENTS: See Diagrams; Exploded Views.
- This procedure is provided for the overhaul on the LH side. Overhaul the other side in the same way.
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
a. Remove the 10 bolts and ornament.
b. Remove the 5 nuts and rear wheel.
2. LOOSEN REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT [42312B/98-45]
a. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap.
b. With depressing the brake pedal, remove the nut.
3. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR BRACE CENTER [57533A/98-65]
a. Remove the 4 bolts and front floor brace center.
4. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE ASSY CENTER [17420/98-20]
a. Remove the 2 bolts, nuts, gasket and separate the exhaust center pipe from front exhaust pipe.
b. Remove the 4 O-rings, 2 exhaust pipe support and exhaust pipe center with the exhaust tail pipe.
5. REMOVE RR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LOWER LH [52298/98-65]
a. Remove the 2 bolts and RR suspension member brace rear lower LH.
6. REMOVE RR END BODY MOUNTING SET PLATE [52299A/98-65]
a. Remove the 4 bolts and RR end body mounting set plate.
7. REMOVE REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE LH [52295/98-65]
a. Remove the 2 bolts and suspension member brace LH.
8. SEPARATE SPEED SENSOR REAR LH [89546/98-136]
a. Remove the bolt and speed sensor rear LH from rear axle carrier.
9. SEPARATE TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSY LH [48706B/98-64]
10. SEPARATE UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSY REAR LH [48790/98-64]
11. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH [42340B/98-45]
a. Place matchmarks on the drive shaft and side gear shaft.
NOTICE: Do not punch to mark the matchmarks. Use paint, etc.
b. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the 6 hexagon bolts and 2 washers with depressing the brake pedal.
c. Hold the inboard joint side of the drive shaft so that the outboard joint side does not bend too much.
d. Using a brass bar and hammer, lightly tap the end of the drive shaft, disengage the axle hub and remove the drive shaft.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the boots, end cover, speed sensor rotor of the drive shaft and oil seal of the axle hub.
12. FIX AXLE ASSY RR LH
13. INSPECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH [42340B/98-45]
a. Check that operation of the joint is smooth within the sliding region in the axial direction.
HINT: If a large angle is used for the cross groove type joint, the joint will feel like it is catching, but this does not indicate an abnormality.
b. Check that the boots are not cracked, damaged or leaking.
c. Check that there are no scratches on the speed sensor rotor.
14. REMOVE REAR AXLE INBOARD JOINT END COVER [42344/98-45]
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the end cover.
b. Use bolts, nuts and washers to keep the inboard joint together.
NOTICE: Tighten the bolt by hand to avoid scratching the flange surface.
15. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT NO. 2 CLAMP [42347B/98-45]
a. Using a side cutter or pliers, remove the boot No. 2 clamp.
16. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP [42347A/98-45]
a. Using a side cutter or pliers, remove the boot clamp.
17. SEPARATE INBOARD JOINT BOOT
18. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT CROSS GROOVE JOINT SUB-ASSY [43409D/98-45]
a. Place matchmarks on the inboard joint and drive shaft.
NOTICE: Do not punch the marks.
b. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring.
c. Using SST, an extension bar and a press, press out the inboard joint from the drive shaft.

19. REMOVE REAR AXLE INBOARD JOINT COVER [43446/98-45]
a. Mount the inboard joint in a soft jaw vise.
b. Using a screwdriver and hammer, tap out the inboard joint cover from the inboard joint.
NOTICE: Make sure the cage and inner race are not positioned too much to one side of the outer race.
20. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT NO. 2 CLAMP [42346B/98-45]
a. Using a side cutter or pliers, remove the boot No. 2 clamp.
21. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP [42346A/98-45]
a. Using a side cutter or pliers, remove the boot clamp.
22. REMOVE INBOARD JOINT BOOT
23. REMOVE OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT
24. REMOVE REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR NO. 1 LH [42451B/98-45]
a. Mount the outboard joint in a soft jaw vise.
b. Using a screwdriver and hammer, remove the dust deflector No. 1.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor.
25. INSTALL REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR NO. 1 LH [42451B/98-45]
a. Using SST and a press, install a new dust deflector No. 1.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the ABS speed sensor rotor.
26. INSTALL OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT
a. Before assembling the boots. Pack with only the same amount of grease that was wiped off.
Grease capacity 100 - 105 g (3.5 - 3.7 oz.)
HINT: Use the grease supplied in the boot kit.
HINT:
- Keep grease off the joint connection groove of the boot.
- Pack with grease all over the ball contact surface inside the joint.
27. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT NO. 2 CLAMP [42346B/98-45]
a. Position the No. 2 clamp onto the boot.
b. Place SST onto the No. 2 clamp.
SST 09521-24010
c. Tighten SST so that the clamp is pinched as shown in the illustration.
NOTICE: Do not over tighten the SST.
d. Using SST, adjust the clearance of the clamp.
SST 09240-00020 (09242-00080)
Clearance: 0.8 mm (0.031 inch) or less
28. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP [42346A/98-45]
HINT: Employ the same procedure with step 23 to install the boot clamp.
29. INSTALL REAR AXLE INBOARD JOINT COVER [43446/98-45]
If the joint has come apart, reassemble it in the following order.
a. Align the matchmarks placed before removal.
When the matchmarks have disappeared, do the following procedure.
1. Install the inner race to the cage so that the indented beveled part of the inner race is on the opposite side to the beveled top of the cage.
2. Install the outer race so that the indented side of the outer race is facing the same side as the beveled surface of the cage.
3. Match the narrow projections of the inner race with the wide projections of the outer race.
b. Tilt the cage and inner race to the side and insert the balls one by one.
NOTICE: When the cage and inner race are tilted over, support the joint with your hand to prevent the balls from falling out.
c. Apply FIPG to the inboard joint cover as shown in the illustration.
FIPG: Part No. 08826-00801, THREE BOND 1121 or equivalent
HINT: Avoid applying an excessive amount to the surface.
d. Remove grease from the surface of the inboard joint facing to the cover.
e. Align the bolt holes of the cover with those of the inboard joint, then insert the hexagon bolts.
f. Use a plastic hammer to tap the rim of the inboard joint cover into place. Do this in the order shown, and repeat several times.
30. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT CROSS GROOVE JOINT SUB-ASSY [43409D/98-45]
a. Align the matchmarks placed before removal.
b. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap the inboard joint onto the drive shaft.
NOTICE: Check that the brass bar is touching the inner race, and not the cage.
31. INSTALL INBOARD JOINT BOOT
a. Before assembling the boots, pack with only the same amount of grease that
HINT: Use the grease supplied in the boot kit.
NOTICE: Keep grease off the joint connection groove of the boot.
Pack with grease all over the ball contact surface inside the joint.
b. The drive shaft is designed to move ± 20 mm (0.79 inch) from the normal position.

32. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT NO. 2 CLAMP [42347B/98-45]
HINT: Employ the same procedure with step 23 to install the boot clamp.
33. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP [42347A/98-45]
HINT: Employ the same procedure with step 23 to install the boot clamp.
34. INSTALL REAR AXLE INBOARD JOINT END COVER [42344/98-45]
a. Pack grease into the end cover.
b. Remove grease from the surface of the inboard joint facing to the cover.
c. Glue on a new gasket, with the glued side facing toward the outer race side of the inboard joint.
d. Align the bolt holes of the cover with those of the inboard joint.
e. Install the 6 hexagon bolts and washers from the end cover side.
f. Install the 6 nuts to the boot side.
g. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, tighten the bolts. Do this in the order shown, and repeat several times.
h. Check that the claw of the end cover touches the inboard joint.
35. INSPECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH [42340B/98-45]
a. Check that operation of the joint is smooth within the sliding region in the axial direction.
HINT: If a large angle is used for the cross-groove type joint, the joint will feel like it is catching, but this does not indicate an abnormality.
b. Check that the boots are not cracked, damaged or leaking.
c. Check that there are no scratches on the speed sensor rotor.
36. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH [42340B/98-45]
a. Align the matchmarks and drive shaft to the side gear shaft.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the boots and end cover.
b. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, install the 2 washers and 6 hexagon bolts, while applying the brakes.
HINT: Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads of the bolts.
37. INSTALL UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSY REAR LH [48790/98-64]
38. INSTALL TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSY LH [48706B/98-64]
39. INSTALL SPEED SENSOR REAR LH [89546 / 9-136]
a. Install the speed sensor with the bolt.
Torque: 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.)
40. INSTALL REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE LH [52295/98-65]
a. Install the suspension member brace LH with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)
41. INSTALL RR END BODY MOUNTING SET PLATE [52299A/98-65]
a. Install the RR end body mounting set plate with the 4 bolts.
42. INSTALL RR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LOWER LH [52298/98-65]
a. Install the RR suspension member brace rear lower LH with the 2 bolts.
43. INSTALL EXHAUST PIPE ASSY CENTER [17420/98-20]
a. Install the exhaust pipe with a gasket and 2 exhaust pipe support.
b. Install the 2 bolts, nuts and 4 O-rings.
44. INSTALL FRONT FLOOR BRACE CENTER [57533A/98-65]
a. Install the front floor brace center with the 4 bolts.
45. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
a. Install the rear wheel with the 5 nuts.
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the ornament with the 10 bolts.
Torque: 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 inch lbs.)
