Front

REPLACEMENT

HINT:
^ COMPONENTS: See Diagrams; Exploded Views.
^ Replace the RH side by the same procedures with LH side.

1. REMOVE WHEEL HUB ORNAMENT SUB-ASSY [42603/98-46]
a) Remove the 10 bolts and wheel hub ornament sub-assy.
2. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
a) Remove the 5 nuts and front wheel.





3. SEPARATE SPEED SENSOR FRONT LH [89543/98-136]
a) Remove the bolt and speed sensor wire harness.

4. SEPARATE STEERING KNUCKLE LH [43212/98-62]
a) Remove the clip and nut.





b) Using SST, disconnect the upper suspension arm from the steering knuckle.

5. REMOVE FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER WITH COIL SPRING





a) Remove the bolt and nut, and disconnect the shock absorber from the shock absorber bracket.
b) Loosen the piston rod lock nut.

NOTICE: Do not remove it.





c) Remove the 3 nuts, spring support reinforcement and shock absorber with coil spring.
d) Remove the suspension support No. 1 from the shock absorber with coil spring.
6. REMOVE SHOCK ABSORBER ASSY FRONT LH [48520/98-63]





a) Using SST, compress the coil spring.

NOTICE: Do not use an impact wrench. It will damage the SST.

b) Remove the piston rod lock nut.
c) Remove the front suspension support assy, front coil spring insulator upper and front coil spring.





7. INSPECT SHOCK ABSORBER ASSY FRONT LH [48520/98-63]
a) Compress and extend the shock absorber rod and check that there is no abnormal resistance or unusual operation sounds.
If there is any abnormality, replace the shock absorber with a new one.
8. INSTALL SHOCK ABSORBER ASSY FRONT LH [48520/98-63]





a) Install the front coil spring insulator upper to the suspension support assy.

HINT: Match the bolt of the suspension support assy with the cut-out part of the front coil spring insulator upper.





b) Using SST, compress the front coil spring.

NOTICE: Do not use an impact wrench. It will damage the SST.

c) Install the front coil spring to the shock absorber assy front.

HINT: Fit the lower end of the coil spring into the recess of the spring seat of the shock absorber.

d) Install the front suspension support assy to the rod.
e) Temporarily tighten a new lock nut.





f) Align the front suspension support assy with the shock absorber assy front lower bolt, as shown.
g) Remove the SST.

HINT: After removing the SST, recheck the direction of the suspension support.

9. INSTALL FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER WITH COIL SPRING
a) Install the front suspension support assy to the shock absorber with coil spring.





b) Install the spring support reinforcement, 3 nuts and shock absorber with coil spring.
Torque: 56 Nm (570 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.)
c) Fully tighten a new lock nut.
Torque: 28 Nm (286 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.)





d) Install the bolt and nut, and disconnect the shock absorber to the shock absorber bracket.
Torque: 157 Nm (1,600 kgf-cm, 116 ft. lbs.)

HINT: After stabilizing the suspension, torque the bolt.





10. CONNECT STEERING KNUCKLE LH [43212/98-62]
a) Connect the front suspension upper arm assy LH to the steering knuckle LH.
b) Install the new nut and a new cotter pin.
Torque: 87 Nm (890 kgf-cm, 64 ft. lbs.)

HINT: After stabilizing the suspension, torque the bolt.

11. CONNECT SPEED SENSOR FRONT LH [89543/98-136]
a) Connect the speed sensor wire with the bolt.
Torque: 5.0 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.)
12. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL
a) Install the front wheel with the 5 nuts.
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
13. INSTALL WHEEL HUB ORNAMENT SUB-ASSY [42603/98-46]
a) Install the ornament with the 10 bolts.
Torque: 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)
14. INSPECT FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT

DISPOSAL

HINT: Dispose the RH side by the same procedures with LH side.





1. DISPOSE SHOCK ABSORBER ASSY FRONT LH [48520/98-63]
a) Drill hole to discharge gas from the cylinder.
1) Place the shock absorber horizontally to prevent the oil from coming out.
2) Using a drill, make a hole on the top of the shell as shown to discharge the gas inside.

CAUTION: The gas coming out is harmless, but be careful of chips which may fly up when drilling.
