Shifter A/T: Service and Repair

FLOOR SHIFT ASSEMBLY













REMOVAL
1. RAISE VEHICLE

NOTICE: Make sure that the vehicle is securely supported.

2. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE
3. REMOVE HEAT INSULATOR
Remove the 4 bolts and heat insulator.
Torque: 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.)
4. DISCONNECT SHIFT CONTROL ROD
5. LOWER VEHICLE
6. REMOVE CLUSTER FINISH PANEL WITH POSITION INDICATOR COVER
7. REMOVE CONSOLE BOX
8. REMOVE CENTER AIR DUCT





9. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY
a. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness from the shift lever assembly.
b. Remove the 4 bolts and shift lever assembly.
Torque: 8.3 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 74 inch lbs.)

DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER KNOB AND SHIFT LEVER KNOB COVER
2. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING





a. Disconnect the indicator lamp wire sub-assembly from the shift lever plate.





b. Using a screwdriver, remove the position indicator housing.





c. Using a screwdriver, remove the position indicator lens from the position indicator housing.
d. Remove the 4 spring holders from the position indicator housing.
e. Remove the shift lever cap from the position indicator housing.
3. REMOVE INDICATOR LAMP WIRE SUB-ASSEMBLY
Remove the indicator lamp wire subassembly from the position indicator lens.
4. REMOVE SLIDE COVER





5. DISASSEMBLY INDICATOR LAMP WIRE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the bulb from the indicator lamp wire sub-assembly.
b. Using a small screwdriver, remove the terminals of the indicator lamp wire sub-assembly from the connector, as shown in the illustration.





6. REMOVE SHIFT LOCK RELEASE LINK AND SPRING
7. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER GUIDE HOUSING





a. Remove the 2 nuts and bolts.
b. Separate the shift lever guide housing from the shift lever plate.





c. Using a screwdriver, separate the position indicator housing plate from the shift lever guide housing.





d. Using pliers, remove the No. 1 shift lock switch plate from the shift lever guide housing.





e. Remove the shift lever torsion spring and spring holder from the shift lever guide housing.





8. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER DETENT PIN AND COMPRESSION SPRING FROM SHIFT LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY





9. REMOVE SHIFT LOCK CONTROL COMPUTER
Remove the 2 screws and shift lock control computer.





10. REMOVE SHIFT LOCK PLATE STOPPER
a. Using a screwdriver, pry and push up the spring damper.
b. Using nippers, cut the spring damper off it.
c. Remove the shift lock plate stopper and shift lever torsion spring.





11. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Using a small screwdriver, remove the shift lever nut.
b. Remove the pin and shift lever sub-assembly.





12. REMOVE CONTROL LEVER, SPACER, CONTROL SHAFT AND SHIFT LEVER BOOT
a. Remove the nut.
b. Remove the 2 spacers and control shaft from the shift lever plate.
c. Disconnect the shift lever boot from the shift lever plate.
d. Remove the control lever from the shift lever boot.





13. REMOVE CLIP, CONNECTING ROD SWIVEL, LOWER CONTROL SHAFT BUSH, LOWER CONTROL SHAFT PIECE AND PLATE WASHER FROM CONTROL LEVER
a. Using pliers, remove the clip.
b. Remove the connecting rod swivel, lower control shaft bush, lower control shaft piece and 2 plate washers from the control lever.

REASSEMBLY

HINT: Before reassembly, apply MP grease to the parts indicated by arrows.





1. INSTALL CLIP, CONNECTING ROD SWIVEL, LOWER CONTROL SHAFT BUSH, LOWER CONTROL SHAFT PIECE AND PLATE WASHER TO CONTROL LEVER
a. Install the 2 plate washers, lower control shaft piece, lower control shaft bush and connecting rod swivel to the control lever.
b. Using pliers, install the clip.





2. INSTALL CONTROL LEVER, SHIFT LEVER BOOT, SPACER AND CONTROL SHAFT
a. Install the shaft lever boot to the shift lever.
b. Connect the shift lever boot to the shift lever plate.
c. Install the control shaft and 2 spacers.
d. Install and torque the nut.
Torque: 12.5 Nm (128 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)





3. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the pin and shift lever subassembly.
b. Install the shift lever nut.
4. INSTALL SHIFT LOCK PLATE STOPPER





a. Install the shift lever torsion spring.

HINT: Hook the spring on to the shift lever plate as shown in the illustration.





b. Install the shift lock plate stopper.

HINT: Hook the spring on to the shift lock plate stopper as shown in the illustration.





c. Install a new spring damper to the shift lock plate stopper by knocking them lightly via the 10 mm seated nut.
5. INSTALL SHIFT LOCK CONTROL COMPUTER





Install the shift lock control computer with the 2 screws.
Torque: 2.0 Nm (20, 17 inch lbs.)





HINT: Connect the solenoid of the shift lock control computer and the shift lock plate stopper as shown in the illustration.





6. INSTALL COMPRESSION SPRING AND SHIFT LEVER DETENT PIN TO SHIFT LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
7. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER GUIDE HOUSING





a. Install the shift lever torsion spring and a new spring holder to the shift lever guide housing.





b. Install the No. 1 shift lock switch plate to the shift lever guide housing.
c. Connect the position indicator housing plate and shift lever guide housing sub-assembly.
d. Install the shift lever guide housing to the shift lever plate.





e. Install the 2 nuts and bolts.
Torque: 3.0 Nm (29, 25 inch lbs.)





8. INSTALL SHIFT LOCK RELEASE LINK AND SPRING
9. ASSEMBLE INDICATOR LAMP WIRE SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the terminals of the indicator lamp wire sub-assembly to the connector.
b. Install the bulb to the indicator lamp wire sub assembly.
10. INSTALL SLIDE COVER
11. INSTALL INDICATOR LAMP WIRE SUB-ASSEMBLY
Install the indicator lamp wire sub-assembly to the position indicator lens.
12. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING
a. Install the shift lever cap to the position indicator housing.
b. Install the 4 spring holders to the position indicator housing.





c. Install the position indicator lens to the position indicator housing.





d. Install the position indicator housing to the shift lever plate.

HINT: Fit the 4 clips of the position indicator housing in the shift lever plate securely.





e. Connect the indicator lamp wire sub-assembly to the shift lever plate.
13. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER KNOB AND SHIFT LEVER KNOB COVER

INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

HINT: After installation, inspect the shift lever position.
- When shifting from P to R position only with ignition switch ON and brake pedal, make sure that the shifting lever moves smoothly and can be moderately operated.
- When starting engine, make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting from N to D position and moves rearward when shifting to R position.
