STEERING COLUMN GROAN NOISE



This Service Bulletin is to inform you that the Steering Column Upper Tube Assembly has been changed to reduce the possibility of groan noise from the steering column.

APPLICABLE VEHICLES: 2001 and 2002 model year LS430 vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below.

REPLACEMENT
1. Record Memory

With the ignition key in the ON position, record the customer's radio presets and press the seat memory switch 1. For UL models also press memory switch 1 for each rear seat position.

2. Turn ignition key to the OFF position
3. Disconnect Negative Battery Terminal








4. Remove Steering Wheel Pad

NOTE:
If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON, DTCs will be recorded.


CAUTION:
Disconnect the battery for at least 90 seconds before beginning work on SRS.


a) Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
b) Remove the steering wheel lower No. 2 cover and pad switch modulator cover.
c) Using a torx driver, loosen the 2 torx screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
d) Disconnect the connector.
e) Pull out the wheel pad from the steering wheel.







f) Using a screwdriver, disconnect the airbag connectors as shown in the illustration.

NOTE:
When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull or damage the airbag wire harness.








CAUTION:
- When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
- Never disassemble the wheel pad.








5. Remove Steering Wheel
a) Disconnect the connectors.
b) Remove the steering wheel set nut.
c) Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.
d) Using SST, remove the steering wheel.
SST 09950 50012 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05020)

6. Remove No. 1 Under Cover
a) Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the No. 1 under cover.
b) Disconnect the 2 connectors, DLC3 and remove the No. 1 under cover.

7. Remove Finish Plate
8. Remove No. 1 Safety Pad
a) Remove 2 screws and disconnect the engine hood release lever.
b) Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the No. 1 safety pad.
c) Disconnect the connectors, clamps and remove the No. 1 safety pad.

9. Remove Column Lower Cover
Remove the 3 screws and column lower cover.

10. Remove No. 5 Heater to Register Duct
Remove the clip and No. 5 heater to register duct.

11. Remove Air Sealed Plate







12. Remove Sliding Yoke Sub-Assembly
a) Place matchmarks on the sliding yoke sub-assembly and control valve shaft.
b) Remove the 2 bolts and sliding yoke sub-assembly.

13. Remove Steering Column Assembly
a) Disconnect the connectors.
b) Loosen the clamp.
c) Disconnect the No. 2 column hole cover sub-assembly.
d) Remove the return spring.
e) Remove the 4 column assembly set nuts and steering column assembly.
f) Remove the intermediate shaft dust cover.

14. Remove Column Upper Cover, Combination Switch and Spiral Cable
a) Remove the column upper cover.
b) Remove the 2 screws and combination switch.
c) Remove the spiral cable.

NOTE:
Do not disassemble the spiral cable or apply oil to it.








15. Remove No. 2 Intermediate Shaft Assembly
a) Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and main shaft assembly.
b) Remove the bolt and No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.







16. Remove the column Upper Tube Assembly With Main Shaft Assembly
a) Remove the 2 bolts and telescopic steering slider support.
b) Disconnect the telescopic steering slider and screw.







c) Remove the 2 telescopic lever lock bolts and 2 telescopic steering wedge lock springs.







d) Remove the column tube stopper bolt.







e) Using a screwdriver, remove the snap ring.
f) Place ignition key in ignition lock cylinder and push inward while turning to the ON position to release steering column lock.
g) Remove the column upper tube assembly with main shaft assembly from the column tube assembly.







17. Remove Column Tube Assembly
a) Remove the 3 bushings.
b) Wipe the grease from 3 bushings.







c) Remove the screw and disconnect the tilt steering support bond cable.







d) Remove the bolt and disconnect the connector bracket.







e) Using a socket wrench (19 mm), washer, nut and bolt (6 mm (0.236 in.) normal diameter, 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) pitch), remove the tilt adjusting nut No. 1 and bushing.
f) Employ the same manner described above to the other side.







g) Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 2 tilt steering bolts, column upper tube assembly and support stopper bolt bushing.
h) Remove the column tube assembly.







18. Install Column Upper Tube Assembly
a) Install the 2 new support stopper bolt bushings.
b) Using a hexagon wrench, install the new column upper tube assembly with 2 tilt steering bolts.

Torque: 20 N-m (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft-lbf)







c) Install the new support stopper bolt bushing.
d) Using a brass bar and a hammer, drive in the tilt adjusting nut No. 1.
e) Employ the same manner described to the other side.







f) Connect the connector bracket with the bolt.

Torque: 50 N-m (50 kgf-cm, 43 in-lbf)







g) Connect tilt steering support bond cable with the screw.







h) Apply a thin coat of molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease to the 3 new bushings.
i) Install the 3 new bushings.







19. Install Column Upper Tube Assembly With Main Shaft Assembly
a) Push in and turn the ignition key to the START position and carefully insert the column upper tube assembly with main shaft assembly into the column tube.
b) Install the new snap ring.







c) Install the 2 telescopic steering wedge lock springs and 2 telescopic lever lock bolts.

Torque: 19 N-m (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft-lbf)







d) Install the column tube stopper bolt.







e) Connect the telescopic steering glider and screw.
f) Install the telescopic steering slider support with 2 bolts.

Torque: 11 N-m (110 kgf-cm, 8 ft-lbf)







20. Install No. 2 Intermediate Shaft Assembly
a) Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
b) Install the bolt.

Torque: 35 N-m (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft-lbf)

21. Install Spiral Cable, Combination Switch and Column Upper Cover.
a) Install the spiral cable.
b) Install the combination switch with the 2 screws.
c) Install the column upper cover.

22. Install Steering Column Assembly
a) Install the intermediate shaft dust cover.
b) Install the steering column assembly with the 4 column assembly set nuts.

Torque: 25 N-m (260 kgf-cm, 19 ft-lbf)

c) Install the return spring.
d) Connect the No. 2 column hole cover sub-assembly.
e) Torque the clamp.
f) Connect the connectors.







23. Install Sliding Yoke Sub-Assembly
a) Align the matchmarks on the sliding yoke sub-assembly and control valve shaft.
b) Install the sliding yoke sub-assembly with the 2 bolts.

Torque: 35 N-m (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft-lbf)

c) Install the LH front fender apron with bolt and clip.
d) Install the return spring.
e) Tighten the clamp.
f) Connect the No. 2 column hole cover.
g) Connect the connectors.

24. Install Air Sealed Plate
25. Install No. 5 Heater to Register Duct.
a) Install the No. 5 heater to register duct with the clip.

26. Install Column Lower Cover
a) Install the column lower cover with the 3 screws.

27. Install No. 1 Safety Pad
a) Connect the connectors and clamps.
b) Install the No. 1 safety pad.
c) Connect the engine hood release lever with the 2 screws.

28. Install Finish Plate
29. Install No. 1 Under Cover

a) Connect the 2 connectors and DLC3.
b) Install the No. 1 under cover with the 2 screws.







30. Center Spiral Cable
a) Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
b) Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn.
c) Then rotate the cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the marks.

HINT:
The cable will rotate about 2.5 turns to either left or right of the center.


31. Install Steering Wheel
a) Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.
b) Install the steering wheel set nut.

Torque: 50 N-m (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft-lbf)

c) Connect the connectors.

32. Install Steering Wheel Pad

NOTE:
- Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
- Make sure the wheel pad is installed with the specified torque.
- If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects on the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
- When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wiring does not interfere with other parts and that they are not pinched between other parts.


a) Connect the airbag connectors.
b) Connect the connector.







c) Install the steering wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of of the torx screws is caught on the screw case.
d) Using a torx socket wrench, torque the 2 screws.

Torque: 8.8 N-m (90 kgf-cm, 78 ft-lbf)

e) Install the pad switch modulator cover and steering wheel lower No. 2 cover.

33. Check Steering Wheel Center Point
34. Connect Negative Battery Terminal
35. Test Steering Column Operation
36. Reprogram Radio With Customer's Presets
37. Reset seat position memory switch 1 for all seats.
