Air Bag Systems

Repairs and Inspections Required After A Collision


Steering Wheel Pad and Spiral Cable

VEHICLES NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION




a. Do a diagnostic system check.
b. Do a visual check which includes the following items with the steering wheel pad (with airbag) installed in the vehicle.
Check cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the steering wheel pad top surface and in the grooved portion.

VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG IS NOT DEPLOYED




a. Do a diagnostic system check.
b. Do a visual check which includes the following items with the steering wheel pad (with airbag) removed from the vehicle.
- Check for cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the steering wheel pad top surface and in the grooved portion.
- Check for cuts and cracks in wire harness, and chipping in connectors.
- Check for the deformation of the horn button contact plate of the steering wheel.






HINT:
- If the horn button contact plate of the steering wheel is deformed, never repair it. Always replace the steering wheel assembly with a new one.




- There should be no interference between the steering wheel pad and steering wheel, and the clearance should be uniform all the way around when the new steering wheel pad is installed on the steering wheel.

CAUTION: For removal and installation of the steering wheel pad and be sure to follow the correct procedure.

VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG IS DEPLOYED

a. Do a diagnostic system check.
b. Do a visual check which includes the following items with the steering wheel pad (with airbag) removed from the vehicle.
- Check for the deformation on the horn button contact plate of the steering wheel.
- Check for the damage on the spiral cable connector and wire harness.

HINT:
- If the horn button contact plate of the steering wheel is deformed, never repair it. Always replace the steering wheel assembly with a new one.
- There should be no interference between the steering wheel pad and steering wheel, and the clearance should be uniform all the way around when the new steering wheel pad is installed on the steering wheel.


REPLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS
In the following case, replace the steering wheel pad, steering wheel or spiral cable.
- If the airbag has been deployed.
- If the steering wheel pad or spiral cable has been found to be faulty in troubleshooting.
- If the steering wheel pad, steering or spiral cable has been found to be faulty during the check in items.
- If the steering wheel pad has been dropped.

CAUTION: For removal and installation of the steering wheel pad .Be sure to follow the correct procedure.



Front Passenger Airbag Assembly

VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION




a. Do a diagnostic system check.*
b. Do a visual check which includes the following items with the front passenger airbag assembly installed in the vehicle.
Check cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the front passenger airbag assembly and instrument panel.

VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG IS NOT DEPLOYED




a. Do a diagnostic system check.*
b. Do a visual check which includes the following items with the front passenger airbag assembly removed from the vehicle.
- Check cuts minute cracks or marked discoloration on the front passenger airbag assembly.
- Check cuts and cracks in wire harness, and for chipping in connectors.

CAUTION: For removal and installation of the front passenger airbag assembly, and be sure to follow the correct procedure.

VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG IS DEPLOYED

a. Do a diagnostic system check.*
b. Do a visual check which includes the following items with the front passenger airbag assembly removed from the vehicle.
- Check the deformation or cracks on the instrument panel and instrument panel reinforcement.
- Check the damage on the connector and wire harness.






HINT: If the instrument panel or instrument panel reinforcement is deformed or cracked, never repair it. Always replace it with a new one.

REPLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS
In the following cases, replace the front passenger airbag assembly, instrument panel or instrument panel reinforcement.
- If the airbag has been deployed.
- If the front passenger airbag assembly has been found to be faulty in troubleshooting.
- If the front passenger airbag assembly, instrument panel or instrument panel reinforcement has been found to be faulty during the check in items.
- If the front passenger airbag assembly has been dropped.

CAUTION: For replacement of the front passenger airbag assembly.
Be sure to follow the correct procedure.



Side Airbag Assembly

Vehicles not involved in collision:
INSPECT SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM




a. Do a diagnostic system check.*
b. Do a visual check which includes the following item with the seatback assembly installed in the vehicle.
Check that there are no cuts or frayed in seams and out-side of seatback cover.

Vehicle involved in a collision and airbag is not deployed:
INSPECT SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM

a. Do a diagnostic system check.*




b. Do a visual check which includes the following items with the seatback assembly removed from the vehicle.
- Check cuts and cracks of the side airbag assembly.
- Check cuts and cracks in wire harness, and chipping in connectors.

CAUTION: For removal and installation of the seatback assembly .Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

Vehicle involved in a collision and airbag is deployed:
INSPECT SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM

a. Do a diagnostic system check.*
b. Do a visual check which includes the following items with the seatback assembly removed from the vehicle.
- Check the seatback installation part of the seat adjuster.
- Check the damage to the connector and wire harness.

HINT: If the seat adjuster is deformed, never repair it. Always replace it with new one.

REPLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

CAUTION: For removal and installation of the seatback assembly .Be sure to follow the correct procedure.


Curtain Shield Airbag Assembly

Vehicles not involved in collision:
INSPECT SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM

a. Do a diagnostic system check.*
b. Do a visual check which includes the following item with the curtain shield airbag assembly installed in the vehicle. Check cuts, minute cracks or marked discoloration on the front pillar garnish and roof headlining.

Vehicle involved in a collision and airbag is not deployed:
INSPECT SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM

a. Do a diagnostic system check.*




b. Do a visual check which includes the following items with the curtain shield airbag assembly removed from the vehicle.
- Check cuts, tears and cracks, or marked discoloration of the curtain shield airbag assembly.
- Check cuts and cracks in wire harness, and chipping in connectors.

CAUTION: For removal and installation of the curtain shield airbag assembly .Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

Vehicle involved in a collision and airbag is deployed:
INSPECT SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM

a. Do a diagnostic system check.*
b. Do a visual check which includes the following items with the curtain shield airbag assembly removed from the vehicle.




- Check the deformation or cracks on the body that the curtain shield airbag installed to.
- Check the damage to the connector and wire harness.

HINT: If the body that the curtain shield airbag was installed to is deformed or cracked, replace it.

REPLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

CAUTION: For removal and installation of the curtain shield airbag assembly .Be sure to follow the correct procedure.



Airbag Harness


INSPECTION

HINT: The SRS wire harness is integrated with the instrument panel wire harness assembly. The wires for the SRS wire harness are encased in a yellow corrugated tube and all the connectors in the system are a standard yellow color.

VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION
Do a diagnostic system check.*

VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION
a. Do a diagnostic system check.*
b. Check breaks in all wires of the SRS wire harness, and exposed conductors.
c. Check to see if the SRS wire harness connectors are cracked or chipped.

REPLACEMENT
In the following cases,replace the wire harness or connector.
- If any part of the SRS wire harness or any connector has been found to be faulty in troubleshooting.
- If any part of the SRS wire harness or any connector has been found to be faulty during the check in items.

CAUTION: If the wire harness used in the SRS is damaged, replace the whole wire harness assembly.



Airbag Sensor Assembly





VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION
Do a diagnostic system check.*

VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG IS NOT DEPLOYED
Do a diagnostic system check.*

VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG IS DEPLOYED
Replace the airbag sensor assembly.*

REPLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS
In the following cases, replace the airbag sensor assembly.
- If the SRS has been deployed in a collision.
- If the airbag sensor assembly has been found to be faulty in troubleshooting.
- If the airbag sensor assembly has been dropped.

CAUTION: For removal and installation of the airbag sensor assembly .Be sure to follow the correct procedure.



Side and Curtain Shield Airbag Sensor Assembly

VEHICLES NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION
Do a diagnostic system check.*

VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG IS NOT DEPLOYED
Do a diagnostic system check.*

VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG IS DEPLOYED
Replace the side and curtain shield airbag sensor assembly.

REPLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS
In the following cases, replace the side and curtain shield airbag sensor assembly.
- If the side curtain shield airbag assembly has been deployed in a collision.
- If the side curtain shield airbag sensor assembly has been found to be faulty in troubleshooting.
- If the side curtain shield airbag sensor assembly has been dropped.

CAUTION: For removal and installation of the side and curtain shield airbag sensor assembly.Be sure to follow the correct procedure.



Front Airbag Sensor

REPLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS
In the following cases, replace the front airbag sensor.
- If the SRS has been deployed in a collision. (Replace both the left and right airbag sensors.)
- If the front airbag sensor has been found to be faulty in troubleshooting.
- If the front airbag sensor has been found to be faulty during the check in item.
- If the front airbag sensor has been dropped.

CAUTION: For removal and installation of the front airbag sensor.Be sure to follow the correct procedure.



Seat Belt Systems

CAUTION: Replace the seat belt assembly (outer belt, inner belt, bolts or nuts) if it has been used in a severe impact. The entire assembly should be replaced even if damage is not obvious.





1. PRETENSIONER IS NOT ACTIVATED
a. Perform a diagnostic system check.

b. Perform a visual check which includes the following items with the front seat outer belt removed from the vehicle.
- Check for cuts and cracks in, or marked discoloration on the center pillar lower garnish.
- Check for cuts and cracks in wire harnesses, and for chipping in connectors.
- Check for deformation of the center pillar.






CAUTION: For removal and installation of the front seat outer belt . Be sure to follow the correct procedure.

2. PRETENSIONER IS ACTIVATED

a. Perform a diagnostic system check.




b. Perform a visual check which includes the following items with the front seat outer belt removed from the vehicle.
- Check for deformation of the center pillar.
- Check for damage on the connector and wire harness.


REPLACE REQUIREMENTS
In the following cases, replace the seat belt pretensioner.
- If the seat belt pretensioner has been activated.
- If the seat belt pretensioner has been found to be faulty in troubleshooting.
- If the front seat outer belt has been found to be faulty during the check in items 1-b.or 2-(b).
- If the front seat outer belt has been dropped.

CAUTION: For removal and installation of the seat belt pretensioner . Be sure to follow the correct procedure.
