Transmission/Transaxle Replacement
REMOVAL
1. REMOVE LEVEL GAUGE
2. REMOVE FILLER PIPE
Remove the bolt and filler pipe.
3. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT
4. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
5. REMOVE SHIFT CONTROL ROD
Remove the nut and disconnect the rod.
Torque: 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
6. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE SUPPORT BRACKET
Remove the 4 bolts and bracket.
Torque: 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)
7. REMOVE CATALYTIC CONVERTER
Remove the 6 nuts and both side catalytic converters.
Torque: 62 Nm (630 kgf-cm, 46 ft. lbs.)
HINT: At the time of installation, please refer to the following item. Replace the used nuts and gaskets with new ones.
8. REMOVE FRONT WHEELS
9. DISCONNECT LH AND RH STABILIZER BAR LINKS
Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the 2 stabilizer bar links from the front stabilizer bar.
Torque: 74 Nm (750 kgf-cm, 54 ft. lbs.)
HINT: If the ball joint stud turns together with the nut, use a 5 mm hexagon wrench to hold the stud.
10. DISCONNECT LH AND RH SHOCK ABSORBERS
a. Remove the 2 nuts, washers and bolts.
b. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the lower suspension arms.
Torque: 143 Nm (1,460 kgf-cm, 106 ft. lbs.)
HINT: At the time of installation, please refer to the following item. After stabilizing the suspension, torque the nut.
11. DISCONNECT LH AND RH LOWER SUSPENSION ARMS FROM STEERING KNUCKLES
a. Remove the 2 clips and nuts.
Torque: 125 Nm (1,270 kgf-cm, 92 ft. lbs.)
b. Using SST, disconnect the lower suspension arms from the steering knuckles.

12. REMOVE LH AND RH FRONT LOWER SUSPENSION ARM BRACKET STAYS
Remove the 2 nuts, 4 bolts and 2 front lower suspension arm bracket stays.
Torque:
Bolt: 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)
Nut: 59 Nm (600 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs.)
HINT: At the time of installation, please refer to following item. Before installation the lower suspension arm bracket stays, adjust front wheel alignment.
13. DISCONNECT LH AND RH LOWER SUSPENSION ARMS FROM FRAMES
a. Before loosening the 2 front adjusting cams, place matchmarks on the front adjusting cams and body.
b. Remove the 2 nuts, adjusting cams and adjusting cam plate stoppers.
Torque: 226 Nm (2,300 kgf-cm, 116 ft. lbs.)
HINT: At the time of installation, please refer to following item. After stabilizing the suspension, torque the nut.
14. REMOVE SUSPENSION MEMBER
a. Remove the 4 bolts and nuts.
Torque:
Bolt: 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.)
Nut: 33 Nm (340 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.)
b. Remove the LH and RH upper front crossmember extensions and suspension member set plates.
c. Remove the 6 bolts and suspension member with the lower suspension arm.
Torque: 200 Nm (2,050 kgf-cm, 148 ft. lbs.)
15. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER PIPE
a. Loosen the 2 union nuts.
Torque: 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the oil cooler pipe.
b. Remove the 3 bolts and clamps.
c. Disconnect the 2 oil cooler pipes from the transmission.
16. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH MOUNTING BOLT
a. Remove the 2 bolts and converter clutch plate.
b. Turn the crankshaft to gain access and remove the 6 bolts with holding the crankshaft pulley set bolt with a wrench.
Torque: 48 Nm (490 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.)
HINT: At the time of installation, please refer to the following item. First, install the black colored bolt and then the 5 other bolts.
17. SUPPORT TRANSMISSION WITH JACK
18. REMOVE 4 ENGINE REAR MOUNTING BOLTS
Torque: 25 Nm (260 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.)
19. DISCONNECT CONNECTORS AND CLAMPS
a. Tilt down the transmission.
b. Disconnect the following connectors:
- O/D direct clutch speed sensor connector
- Vehicle speed sensor connector
- Park/neutral position switch connector
- Solenoid connector
c. Disconnect the 3 wire harness clamps from the bracket on transmission.
20. REMOVE TRANSMISSION
Remove the 10 bolts and transmission.
Torque:
14 mm bolt: 37 Nm (380 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.)
17 mm bolt: 72 Nm (730 kgf-cm, 53 ft. lbs.)
HINT: At the time of installation, please refer to the following item. Lift the engine front side.
INSTALLATION
1. CHECK TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH INSTALLATION
Using calipers and a straight edge, measure the distance from the installation surface of the transmission housing to the installation surface of the torque converter clutch.
Correct distance: 17.1 mm (0.673 inch) or more
2. TRANSMISSION INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
HINT: After installation, check, inspect and adjust the following items.
- Shift lever position and park/neutral position switch.
- Fluid level
- Conduct the road test of the vehicle
