Disassembly and Reassembly









DISASSEMBLY

NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

1. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY COIL AND KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSEMBLY
Remove the screw.
2. REMOVE SLIDING YOKE
3. REMOVE LOWER DUST COVER
4. REMOVE TELESCOPIC SENSOR PLATE
Remove the bolt.
5. REMOVE TILT POSITION SENSOR
Remove the screw.
6. REMOVE TELESCOPIC POSITION SENSOR
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the 2 screws.
7. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL BRACKET
Remove the 3 screws.
8. REMOVE NO.1 PROTECTOR AND NO.2 PROTECTOR
Remove the 4 bolts.
9. REMOVE CONNECTOR BRACKET
Remove the 2 bolts.
10. REMOVE COLUMN UPPER BRACKET
11. REMOVE TILT STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY WITH MOTOR
a. Remove the 2 stopper nuts, 2 springs and spacer.
b. Remove the bond cable with screw.





c. Set SST and plate washer (36 mm outer diameter), as shown, and then remove the 2 tilt steering No. 2 bolts.
SST 09213-54015 (09214-00030) 09910-00015 (09911-00011, 09912-00010)
(Reference) Plate washer: 90201-10201
d. Remove the tilt steering gear assembly with motor.
e. Remove the 2 bushings and support stopper bolts from the tilt steering gear assembly with motor.





12. REMOVE COLUMN UPPER TUBE WITH MAIN SHAFT
a. Set SST and plate washer (36 mm outer diameter), as shown, and then remove the 2 tilt steering No.1 bolts and bushings.

(Reference) Plate washer: 90201-10201
b. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring from the main shaft.
c. Remove the column upper tube with main shaft from the tilt steering housing support.
13. REMOVE TILT STEERING HOUSING SUPPORT
Remove the 4 bolts.





14. REMOVE MAIN SHAFT
a. Using SST, compress the compression spring.
SST 09950-40011 (09958-04011)
b. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring.
c. Remove the main shaft from the column upper tube
d. Remove the compression spring, thrust collar and bearing.


INSPECTION

NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

1. INSPECT COLUMN UPPER BRACKET
2. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE KEY CYLINDER
3. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH
4. INSPECT KEY UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH
5. INSPECT KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
6. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH WITH KEY UNLOCK WARNING SWITCH AND KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
7. INSPECT TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
8. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
9. IF NECESSARY, REPLACE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER
10. INSPECT BEARING
11. IF NECESSARY, ADJUST 2 TELESCOPIC ADJUSTING SCREWS





a. Using SST, remove the lock nut.
SST 09922-10010

NOTICE: Use SST 09922-10010 in the direction shown in the illustration.





b. Using a hexagon wrench, torque the screw.
Torque: 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 64 inch lbs.)

NOTICE:
- If the adjusting screw is tightened higher than the specified torque, the telescopic mechanism may malfunction. Conversely, if the torque applied is too low, rattling may develop in the column, so the specified torque should always be applied.





- When the adjusting screw and conical springs have been removed, replace the conical springs facing in the direction shown in the illustration.





c. Using a hexagon wrench to hold the screw steady, and using SST, torque the lock nut.
SST 09922-10010
Torque: 26 Nm (261 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Use SST 09922-10010 in the direction shown in the illustration.

HINT: Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 345 mm (13.58 inch).


REASSEMBLY

NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

1. COAT PARTS INDICATED BY ARROWS WITH MOLYBDENUM DISULFIDE LITHIUM BASE GREASE
2. INSTALL MAIN SHAFT
a. Install a new bearing, thrust collar and compression spring to the main shaft.
b. Install the main shaft into the column upper tube.





c. Using SST to compress the compression spring.

d. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring.
3. INSTALL TILT STEERING HOUSING SUPPORT
Torque the 4 bolts.
Torque: 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)

4. INSTALL COLUMN UPPER TUBE WITH MAIN SHAFT
a. Install the column upper tube with main shaft into the tilt steering housing support.
b. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring to the main shaft.





c. Using a vise, press in the 2 tilt steering No.1 bolts with bushings.

HINT: Make sure the column upper tube turns smoothly.

5. INSTALL TILT STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY WITH MOTOR
a. Install the 2 bushings and support stopper bolts to the tilt steering gear assembly with motor.





b. Using a vise, press in the 2 tilt steering No. 2 bolts.
c. Install the bond cable and spacer to the stopper bolt.
d. Install the spring to each stopper bolt.
e. Install and torque 2 new stopper nuts.
Torque: 3.0 Nm (31 kgf-cm, 27 inch lbs.)
f. Tighten the bond cable set screw.
6. INSTALL COLUMN UPPER BRACKET
7. INSTALL CONNECTOR BRACKET
Torque the 2 bolts.
Torque: 4.9 Nm (50 kgf-cm, 43 inch lbs.)
8. INSTALL NO. 1 PROTECTOR AND NO. 2 PROTECTOR
Tighten the 4 bolts.





9. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL BRACKET
Tighten the 3 screws.

HINT: Install the turn signal bracket so that its upper surface is parallel with upper surface of the capsule of the breakaway bracket.

10. INSTALL TILT POSITION SENSOR
Tighten the screw.
11. INSTALL TELESCOPIC POSITION SENSOR
a. Tighten the 2 screws.
b. Connect the connector.





12. INSTALL TELESCOPIC SENSOR PLATE
a. Install the sensor plate, as shown in the illustration.
b. Install the bolt.
Torque: 4.9 Nm (50 kgf-cm, 43 inch lbs.)
13. INSTALL LOWER DUST COVER
14. INSTALL SLIDING YOKE
15. INSTALL KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSEMBLY AND TRANSPONDER KEY COIL
Tighten the screw.
