Ball Joint: Service and Repair






REMOVAL
1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
2. REMOVE FRONT BRAKE CALIPER
a. Remove the 2 bolts and brake caliper.
Torque: 118 Nm (1,200 kgf-cm, 87 ft. lbs.)





b. Support the brake caliper securely.
3. DISCONNECT ABS SPEED SENSOR AND WIRE HARNESS
Remove the 2 bolts, ABS speed sensor and wire harness.

NOTICE: When removing them from right side do not disconnect the pad wear indicator connector.

Torque: 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.)
4. DISCONNECT TIE ROD END FROM LOWER BALL JOINT
a. Remove the clip and nut from the tie rod end.
Torque: 59 Nm (600 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs.)





b. Using SST, disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.

5. DISCONNECT LOWER BALL JOINT FROM LOWER SUSPENSION ARM
a. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the lower ball joint.
Torque: 152 Nm (1,550 kgf-cm, 112 ft. lbs.)
b. Using SST, remove the lower ball joint from the lower suspension arm.

6. REMOVE LOWER BALL JOINT FROM STEERING KNUCKLE
Remove the 2 bolts and lower ball joint.
Torque: 113 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.)


INSPECTION
INSPECT BALL JOINT FOR ROTATION CONDITION





a. Flip the ball joint stud back and forth 4 - 5 times before installing the nut.
b. Using a torque wrench, turn the nut continuously one turn every 2 seconds and take the torque reading on the 5th turn.
Torque (turning): 1.0 - 2.5 Nm (1 - 25 kgf-cm, 9 - 21.7 inch lbs.)

INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
AFTER INSTALLATION, CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL AND FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT
