Removal and Installation





REMOVAL
1. Place front wheels facing straight ahead.
2. Remove steering wheel pad, as follows:

NOTICE:
^ If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) will be recorded.
^ Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new parts.

a. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
b. Remove the No. 2 and No. 3 covers.
c. Using a torx wrench, loosen the four torx screws.





NOTE: Loosen the four screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.





d. Pull the wheel pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.

CAUTION:
^ When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
^ When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.
^ Never disassemble the wheel pad.

3. Remove steering wheel, as follows:
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
c. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.





d. Using Special Service Tool (SST) 09950 - 50010 (09951 - 05010, 09952 - 05010, 09953 - 05020, 09954 - 05020) or equivalents, remove the wheel.
4. Disconnect intermediate shaft, as follows:





a. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control value shaft.
b. Loosen bolt A and remove bolt B.
5. Disconnect right and left hand tie rod ends, as follows:
a. Remove the cotter pin and nut.





b. Using SST 09628 - 10011 or equivalent, disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
6. Disconnect pressure feed tube. Remove the union bolt and gasket.
7. Disconnect return tube. Remove the union bolt and the two gaskets.
8. Disconnect Progressive Power Steering (PPS) solenoid connector.
9. Remove bracket and grommet. Remove the two bolts and nuts.
10. Remove power steering gear assembly. Remove the two bolts and nuts.

INSTALLATION
1. Install power steering gear assembly. Torque the two gear assembly set bolts and nuts.
Torque: 76 Nm (56 ft.lbs.).
2. Install bracket and grommet. Torque the two bolts and nuts.
Torque: 76 Nm (56 ft.lbs.).
3. Connect Progressive Power Steering (PPS) solenoid connector.
4. Connect return tube. Torque the union bolt with a new gasket on each side of the tube.
Torque: 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.)
5. Connect pressure tube. Torque the union bolt with a new gasket.
Torque: 49 Nm (36 ft.lbs.)
6. Connect right and left hand tie rod ends, as follows:
a. Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
b. Install the cotter pin and nut.
Torque: 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).
7. Connect intermediate shaft, as follows:





a. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft.
b. Torque bolt B.
Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft lbs.).
c. Torque bolt A.
Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
8. Position front wheels facing straight ahead.

NOTE: Do it with the front of the vehicle jacked up.

9. Center spiral cable, as follows:
a. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
b. Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.





c. Then rotate the spiral cable clockwise about three turns to align the red mark.

NOTE: The spiral cable will rotate about three turns to either left or right of the center.

10. Install steering wheel, as follows:
a. Align the matchmarks on the wheel and steering column main shaft.
b. Temporarily tighten the wheel set nut.
c. Connect the connector.
11. Bleed power steering system.
12. Check steering wheel center point.
13. Torque the steering wheel set nut.
Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft.lbs.).
14. Install steering wheel pad, as follows:

NOTICE:
^ Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.
^ If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
^ When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wiring does not interfere with other parts and is not pinched between other parts.

a. Connect the airbag connector.





b. Install the pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screws is caught on the screw case.
c. Using a torx socket wrench, tighten the four torx screws to 9.0 Nm (80 inch lbs.).
15. Check front wheel alignment.
