Inspection
INSPECTION
NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
1. Inspect column upper bracket Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.
2. If necessary, replace key cylinder, as follows:
a. Place the ignition key at the ACC position.
b. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the key cylinder.
c. Install a new key cylinder.
NOTE: Make sure the ignition key is at the ACC position.
3. Inspect ignition switch. (Continuity Check)
4. Inspect key unlock warning switch. (Measure resistance between terminals 7-8)
5. Automatic Transmission (AT): Inspect key interlock solenoid.
6. Manual Transmission (MT): If necessary, replace ignition switch with key unlock warning switch, as follows:
a. Remove the three screws.
b. Install new switches with three screws.
7. AT: If necessary, replace ignition switch with key unlock warning switch and key interlock solenoid, as follows:
a. Remove the five screws.
b. Install new switches and solenoid with five screws.
8. Inspect bearing. Check the bearing rotation condition and check for abnormal noise. If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace the column upper tube.
9. If necessary, adjust two telescopic adjusting screws, as follows:
a. Using Special Service Tool (SST) 09922 - 10010 or equivalent, remove the lock nut.
NOTICE: Use SST 09922 - 10010 or equivalent, in the direction shown in the illustration.
b. Using a hexagon wrench, torque the screw.
Torque: 6.9 Nm (64 inch lbs.).
NOTICE:
^ If the adjusting screw is tightened higher than the specified torque, the telescopic mechanism may malfunction. Conversely, if the torque applied is too low, rattling may develop in the column, so the specified torque should always be applied.
^ When the adjusting screw and conical springs have been removed, replace the conical springs facing in the direction shown in the illustration.
c. Using a hexagon wrench to hold the screw steady, and using SST 09922 - 10010 or equivalent, tighten the lock nut to 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.).
NOTICE:
^ Use SST 09922 - 10010 or equivalent, in the direction shown in the illustration.
^ Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 345 mm (13.58 inch).
