Disassembly

DISASSEMBLY

NOTICE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

1. Remove ignition key cylinder illumination. Remove the screw.
2. Remove sliding yoke, as follows:





a. Place matchmarks on the sliding yoke and main shaft.
b. Remove the bolt.
3. Remove lower dust cover, as follows:
a. Remove the clip.
b. Using a screwdriver, remove the dust seal from lower dust cover.
4. Remove the telescopic sensor plate bolt. Remove the bolt.
5. Remove tilt position sensor. Remove the screw.
6. Remove telescopic position sensor, as follows:
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the two screws.
7. Remove turn signal bracket. Remove the three screws.
8. Remove No. 1 protector and No. 2 protector. Remove the four bolts.
9. Remove connector bracket. Remove the two bolts.
10. Remove column upper bracket, as follows:
a. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the two tapered-head bolts.
b. Using a 4 - 5 mm (0.16 - 0.20 inch) drill, drill into the two tapered-head bolts.





c. Using a screw extractor, remove the two tapered-head bolts.
d. Remove the bracket.
11. Remove tilt steering gear assembly with motor, as follows:
a. Remove the two stopper nuts, two springs and the spacer.





b. Remove the bond cable with screw.
c. Set Special Service Tool (SST) 09213 - 54015 (09214 - 00030) 09910 - 00015 (09911 - 00011, 09912 - 00010) or equivalents, and plate washer (36 mm outer diameter), as shown, and then remove the two tilt steering No. 2 bolts.
(Reference) Plate washer: 90201-10201.
d. Remove the tilt steering gear assembly with motor.
e. Remove the two bushings and support stopper bolts from the tilt steering gear assembly with motor.
12. Remove column upper tube with the main shaft, as follows:





a. Set the SST 09213 - 54015 (09214 - 00030) 09910 - 00016 (09911 - 00011, 09912 - 00010) or equivalents, and plate washer (36 mm outer diameter), as shown, and then remove the two tilt steering No. 1 bolts and bushings.
(Reference) Plate washer: 90201 - 10201.
b. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring from the main shaft.
c. Remove the column upper tube with main shaft from the tilt steering housing support.
13. Remove tilt steering housing support. Remove the the four bolts.
14. Remove main shaft, as follows:





a. Using SST 09950 - 40010 (09958 - 04010) or equivalent, compress the compression spring.
b. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring.
c. Remove the main shaft from the column upper tube.
d. Remove the compression spring, thrust collar and bearing.
