Manual Transmission
1. Remove hood insulator.
2. Disconnect hood supports from hood.
3. Remove hood.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the body or glass with the hood end.
4. Remove engine under cover.
5. Drain engine coolant.
6. Drain engine oil.
7. Drain fuel from fuel tank.
8. Disconnect the accelerator cable and cruise control actuator cable.
9. Remove air cleaner duct.
10. Remove air cleaner, Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter and intake air connector pipe assembly:
(a) Disconnect the high tension cord from the ignition coil
(b) Disconnect the high tension cord from the clamp on the air cleaner.
(c) Disconnect the MAF meter connector.
(d) Disconnect the PS air hose from No. 4 timing belt cover and PCV hose from No. 2 cylinder head cover
(e) Loosen the hose clamp bolt holding the intake air connector pipe to the throttle body.
(f) Remove the 3 bolts, the air cleaner, MAF meter an intake air connector pipe assembly.
11. Remove radiator assembly, refer to Cooling System.
12. Remove charcoal canister.
(a) Disconnect the EVAP hoses (vacuum hose and air hose) from the charcoal canister.
(b) Remove the charcoal canister.
13. Disconnect PS pump without disconnecting hoses.
(a) Disconnect the PS air hose from No. 4 timing belt cover and the PS air hose from air intake chamber.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and pump rear stay.
(c) Remove the bolt and plate washer, and disconnect the vane pump from the pump bracket.
NOTE: Put aside the vane pump, and suspend it.
(d) Remove the 2 bolts and pump bracket.
14. Disconnect A/C compressor without disconnecting hoses.
(a) Disconnect the compressor connector.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and nut.
(c) Using a torx socket (E10), remove the stud bolt, and disconnect the compressor from the engine.
NOTE: Put aside the compressor, and suspend it.
15. Disconnect engine wire and hoses:
(a) Disconnect the EVAP hose from the No. 2 vacuum pipe.
(b) Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose from the union.
(c) Disconnect the fuel return hose from the engine oil dipstick guide clamp and fuel return pipe. Plug the hose end.
(d) Disconnect these connectors:
(1) 2 connectors from engine room main wire
(2) Igniter connector
(3) Theft deterrent horn connector
(e) Disconnect the engine wire from the 2 wire clamps.
(f) Using a 6 mm hexagon wrench, remove the bolt and connector bracket.
(g) Disconnect the wire clamp and PS solenoid valve connector.
(h) Disconnect the ground strap from the cylinder block.
(i) Disconnect the PS pressure switch connector.
(j) Disconnect the ignition coil connector and the noise filter connector.
(k) Remove the cap and nut, and disconnect the genera for wire.
(l) Disconnect the engine wire from the 2 wire clamps.
(m) Disconnect these hoses:
(1) Vacuum hose (from VSV for heater valve) from check valve.
(2) Heater water hose from heater water valve
(3) Heater water hose from water bypass pipe
(n) Disconnect the VSV connector.
(o) Disconnect the ground strap from the bracket on the body.
(p) Remove the bolt holding the engine wire protector from the body.
(q) Remove the holding for the engine wire protector from the heater valve bracket.
(r) Remove the 2 nuts holding the engine wire clamp from the body.
16. Remove upper console panel, shift lever boot and mounting bolts.
17. Disconnect engine wire from cabin:
(a) Remove the 2 clips, and pull out the instrument panel under cover.
(b) Remove the 4 mounting screws.
(c) Disconnect the connectors, and remove the lower instrument panel, finish panel and glove compartment door assembly.
(d) Pull out the scuff plate.
(e) Take out the -front side of the floor carpet.
(f) Remove the 2 nuts and ECM protector.
(g) Remove the nut, and disconnect the ECM from the floor panel.
(h) Disconnect these connectors:
(1) 2 connectors from ECM
(2) Connector from ABS & TRAC ECU
(3) 2 connectors from TRAC ECU
(4) 4 connectors from connector cassette
(5) Connector from A/C control assembly
(i) Pull out the engine wire from the cabin
18. Remove the 2 clamp bolts, and disconnect the pressure feed hose from the oil pan.
19. Disconnect fuel inlet hose and starter wire.
(a) Remove the union bolt and 2 gaskets, disconnect the fuel inlet hose, and suspend the hose union end upward.
NOTE: Put a suitable container or shop towel under the fuel pipe support and slowly loosen the union bolt.
(b) Remove the nut and disconnect the starter wire.
(c) Disconnect the starter wire from the wire clamp.
20. Remove No. 2 front exhaust pipe and then the 4 nuts and heat pipe insulator.
21. Remove intermediate shaft:
(a) Place the matchmarks on the both flanges.
(b) Remove the 2 center support bearing set bolts and the adjusting washers.
NOTE: Some vehicles are not equipped with an adjusting washer.
(c) Remove the 4 bolts, washers, nuts and intermediate shaft.
(d) Insert SST 09325 - 20010 in transmission to prevent oil leakage.
22. Remove transmission shift lever, and disconnect clutch release cylinder and ground strap from transmission.
23. Remove engine and transmission assembly from vehicle.
(a) Attach the engine hoist chain to the engine hangers.
(b) Remove the 2 nuts holding the engine to the front suspension crossmember.
(c) Remove the 4 bolts, 4 nuts and rear engine mounting member.
(d) Lift the engine out of the vehicle slowly and carefully.
NOTE: Remove the engine and transmission assembly carefully without damaging the A/C compressor or PS solenoid valve.
(e) Make sure the engine is clear of all wiring, hoses and cables.
(f) Place the engine and transmission assembly on to the stand.
