Steering Effort Measurement






1. Center steering wheel.
2. Measure steering effort.
a. Remove the steering wheel pad.
b. Start the engine and run it at idle.
c. Measure the steering effort in both directions. If steering effort is excessive, repair the power steering unit.
Reference (Maximum): 7 Nm (61 inch lbs.)

HINT: Be sure to consider the tire type, pressure and contact surface before making your diagnosis.





d. Disconnect the PPS solenoid connector.
e. Measure the steering effort in both directions and check that the steering effort exceeds the reference value in (c), and that the power assist is operating. If steering effort is not heavier than (c), check the solenoid.

HINT: Be sure to consider the tire type, pressure and contact surface before making your diagnosis.

f. Connect the connector.
g. Torque the steering wheel set nut to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.)
h. Install the steering wheel pad.
