Restraints and Safety Systems: Description and Operation

The SRS is a driver and passenger protection device which has a supplemental role to the seat belts.

When the ignition SW is turned to ACC or ON, current from the FR CIG fuse flows to TERMINAL 16 of the airbag sensor assembly and TERMINAL 16 of the side airbag sensor assembly RH. Only when the ignition SW is on does the current flow from the ion fuse to TERMINAL 15 of the airbag sensor assembly and TERMINAL 15 of the side airbag sensor assembly RH. If an accident occurs while driving, when the frontal impact exceeds a set level, current from the FR CIG or IGN fuse flows to TERMINALS 7 and 3 of the airbag sensor assembly --> TERMINAL 1 of the airbag squibs --> TERMINAL 2 --> TERMINALS 6 and 2 of the airbag sensor assembly --> TERMINAL 9, TERMINAL 10 or BODY GROUND --> GROUND, so that current flows to the front airbag squibs and causes them to operate.

When the side impact also exceeds a set level, current from the FR CIG or IGN fuse flows to TERMINAL 7 of the side airbag sensor assembly RH --> TERMINAL 1 of the side airbag squib RH --> TERMINAL 2 --> TERMINAL 6 of the side airbag sensor assembly --> TERMINAL 9, TERMINAL 10 or BODY GROUND --> GROUND. The current to the side airbag sensor assembly RH also flows to TERMINAL 14 of the side airbag sensor assembly LH through TERMINAL 13 of the side airbag sensor assembly RH --> TERMINAL 7 --> TERMINAL 1 of the side airbag squib LH --> TERMINAL 2 --> TERMINAL 6 of the side airbag sensor assembly LH --> TERMINAL 11 --> TERMINAL 11 of the side airbag sensor assembly RH --> TERMINAL 9, TERMINAL 10 or BODY GROUND --> GROUND, causing side airbag squibs to operate.

The airbag stored inside the steering wheel pad is instantaneously expanded to soften the shock to the driver. The airbag stored inside the passenger's instrument panel is instantaneously expanded to soften the shock to the front passenger.

Side airbags are instantaneously expanded to soften the shock of side to the driver and front passenger.
