Valve Clearance: Adjustments
PREPARATIONNOTE: Inspect and adjust the valve clearance when the engine is cold.
1. Drain engine coolant.
2. Remove battery clamp cover.
3. Remove air cleaner inlet.
4. Remove V-bank cover.
5. Remove air cleaner and intake air connector assembly.
6. Remove No.3 timing belt covers, refer to Timing Components.
7. Remove cylinder head covers as follows:
RH Cylinder Head Cover:
(a) Remove the throttle body, refer to Powertrain Management.
(b) Disconnect the high-tension cords (spark plug wires) and clamps from the cylinder head cover.
(c) Remove the eight bolts, eight seal washers and cylinder head cover.
LH Cylinder Head Cover:
(a) Remove the oil dipstick for the transmission.
(b) Disconnect the EVAP hose (from the charcoal canister) from the Vacuum Solenoid Valve (VSV).
(c) Disconnect the engine wire clamp from the wire bracket on the delivery pipe.
(d) Disconnect the high-tension (spark plug wires) cords and clamps from the cylinder head cover.
(e) Remove the eight bolts, eight seal washers and cylinder head cover.
8. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align it's groove with timing mark "0" on the No.1 timing belt cover as shown in the illustration.
NOTE:
- Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys and timing belt rear plates are aligned.
- If not, turn the crankshaft one revolution (360°) and align the mark as above.
INSPECT VALVE CLEARANCE
1. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the valve lifter and camshaft.
NOTE: Check only the valves indicated by shading in the illustration.
2. Record the out-of-specification valve clearance measurements. They will be used later to determine the required replacement adjusting shim.
Valve clearance (Cold):
Intake 0.15-0.25 mm (0.006-0.010 in).
Exhaust 0.25-0.35 mm (0.010-0.014 in).
3. Turn the crankshaft one revolution (360°) and align the mark as above.
NOTE: Check only the valves indicated by shading in the illustration.
4. Measure and record the valve clearance.
ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE
CAUTION:
- Do not drop the adjusting shim into positions A and B shown in the illustration.
- If dropped into position A, the adjusting shim will pass through the cylinder head and cylinder block into the oil pan.
- If dropped into position B. the adjusting shim cannot be recovered without removing the exhaust camshaft.
1. Disconnect the fuel return hose from the return hose.
2. Remove the adjusting shim as follows.
- Turn the crankshaft so that the cam lobe of the camshaft on the adjusting valve upward.
- Position the hole of the adjusting shim facing the spark plug side.
NOTE: The valve lifter is made of aluminum, which is easily scratched. So when setting valve lifter stopper Special Service Tool (SST) No. 09248-05021 (B), take care not to scratch the face of the valve lifter.
3. Using Valve lifter press SST No. 09248-05410 (A in illustrations above), or equivalent, press down the valve lifter and place SST valve lifter stopper (B in illustrations above), or equivalent, between the camshaft and valve lifter flange.
4. Remove valve lifter press SST (A).
5. Using compressed air and a magnetic finger, remove the adjusting shim by blowing air into the shim hole.
NOTE: Remove the adjusting shim from the intake manifold side.
6. Determine the replacement adjusting shim size according to the following Formula or Charts:
FORMULA METHOD:
- Using a suitable micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim.
- Using the following formula, calculate the thickness of a new shim so that the valve clearance comes within specified value.
T = Thickness of removed shim
A = Measured valve clearance
N = Thickness of new shim
Intake: N = T + (A - 0.20 mm (0.008 in))
Exhaust: N = T + (A - 0.30 mm (0.012 in))
- Select a new shim with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated value.
NOTE: Shims are available in 33 increments of 0.025 mm (0.0010 in), from 2.50 mm (0.0984 in) to 3.30 mm (0.1299 in).
CHART METHOD
- Using a suitable micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim.
- Using the correct table below, select a new shim.

Exhaust Valve Shim Selection Table:
7. Install a new adjusting shim as follows
- Place a new adjusting shim on the valve lifter.
- Using valve lifter press SST (A in illustrations), press down the valve lifter
- Remove valve lifter stopper SST (B), then valve lifter press SST (A).
8. Recheck the valve clearance.
9. Reconnect the fuel return hose to the return hose.
11. Install cylinder head covers.
12. Install NO.3 timing belt covers, refer to Timing Components.
13. Install air cleaner and intake air connector assembly.
14. Fill with engine coolant.
15. Start engine and check for leaks.
16. Check engine coolant level.
17. Install V-bank cover.
18. Install air cleaner inlet.
19. Install battery clamp cover.
