- Disconnect the upper sides of the RH and LH cool air ducts.
- Remove the nut and upper radiator support.
- Remove the two upper radiator supports. Lift out the radiator assembly.
- Remove the two lower radiator supports from the radiator.
10. Disconnect the two air control valve hoses of the PS pump from the hose clamp on the timing belt cover, then remove the four bolts, RH No.3 timing belt cover and two gaskets.
11. Remove LH No.3 timing belt cover as follows:
(a) Disconnect the EVAP hose clamp from the timing belt cover.
(b) Remove the four bolts.
(c) Disconnect the cord grommet from the timing belt cover, and remove the timing belt cover and two gaskets.
12. Remove the drive belt idler pulley bolt and cover plate then the idler pulley.
13. Remove RH No.2 timing belt cover as follows:
(a) Disconnect the radiator reservoir outlet hose from the water inlet housing.
(b) Remove the two bolts, disconnect the outlet pipe from the timing belt cover and LH cylinder head.
(c) Disconnect the No.2 camshaft position sensor connector from the ignition coil bracket.
(d) Remove the four bolts.
(e) Disconnect the sensor wire from the timing belt cove
(f) Remove the wire grommet from the timing belt cover.
(g) Disconnect the wire clamp from the timing belt cover.
(h) Remove the timing belt cover and four gaskets.
14. Remove LH No.2 timing belt cover as follows:
(a) Disconnect the engine wire from the two wire clamps.
(b) Remove the three bolts.
(c) Disconnect the No.1 camshaft position sensor wire from the wire clamp on the timing belt cover.
(d) Disconnect the sensor connector from the connector bracket, and remove the connector bracket.
(e) Disconnect the sensor connector.
(f) Remove the wire grommet from the timing belt cover.
(g) Remove the timing belt cover and two gaskets.
15. Remove distributor housings, refer to Powertrain Management.
16. Remove No.1 ignition coil, refer to Powertrain Management
17. Disconnect A/C compressor from engine as follows:
(a) Disconnect the A/C compressor connector.
(b) Disconnect the wire clamp from the wire bracket c the A/C compressor.
(c) Remove the bolt, and disconnect the ground cable from the A/C compressor stay.
(d) Remove the bolt, nut and A/C compressor stay.
(e) Remove the bolt, and disconnect the wire bracket from the A/C compressor.
(f) Remove the bolt, and disconnect the A/C compressor from the engine.
18. Remove the two fan bracket bolts and two nuts then the bracket.
19. If re-using timing belt, check that there are three installation marks on the timing belt by turning the crankshaft pulley as shown in the illustration.
NOTE: If the installation marks have disappeared, place a new installation mark on the timing belt before removing each part.
20. Using crankshaft pulley holder Special Service Tool (SST) No. 09213-54015 and companion flange holder SST No. 09330-00021, or equivalent, loosen but do not remove crankshaft pulley bolt.
21. Set No.1 cylinder to approx. 50° ATDC/Compression as follows:
(a) Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with timing mark "0" of the No.1 timing belt cover.
(b) Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys and timing belt rear plates aligned. If not, turn the crankshaft one revolution (36Q°).
(c) Turn the crankshaft pulley approx. 50° Clockwise, and put the timing mark of the crankshaft pulley in line with the centers of the crankshaft pulley bolt and the idler pulley bolt.
CAUTION: If the timing belt is disengaged, having the crankshaft pulley at the wrong angle or turning crankshaft or camshaft can cause the piston head and valve head to come into contact with each other causing damage. So always set the crankshaft pulley at the correct angle.
(d) Without allowing pulley bolt to turn, remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
22. Alternately loosen the two timing belt tensioner bolts, then remove the belt tensioner and dust boot.
23. Using variable pin wrench (SST No. 09962-10010), or equivalent, loosen the tension spring between the LH and RH camshaft timing pulleys by slightly turning the LH camshaft timing pulley clockwise, then remove the timing belt from the camshaft timing pulleys.
24. Using the SST variable pin wrench, or equivalent and a suitable socket wrench, remove the bolt from the timing pulley then the two timing pulleys.
25. Remove the alternator.
26. Remove drive belt tensioner bolt and two nuts then the belt tensioner.
27. Using the puller set (SST No. 09950-50010), or equivalent, remove the crankshaft pulley.
CAUTION: To prevent piston/valve contact, do not allow the crankshaft pulley to turn.
28. Remove the four No.1 timing belt cover bolts, then the cover and gasket.
29. Remove timing belt guide.
30. Remove timing belt cover spacer.
31. Remove timing belt.
NOTE: If re-using the belt and the installation mark has disappeared from it, place a new installation mark on the timing belt to the match the dot mark of the crankshaft timing pulleys as shown in the illustration.
