Fuel System
1. CHECK FUEL PUMP OPERATION:- Using SST 09843-18020 or equivalent, connect terminals +B and FP of the DLC1.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
NOTICE: Do not start the engine.
- Check that there is pressure in the fuel inlet hose from the fuel filter.
HINT: At this time, you will hear fuel return noise.
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Remove the SST from the DLC1.
- If there is no pressure, check the following parts:
- Fuse
- EFI main relay
- Fuel pump ECU
- Fuel pump
- ECM
- Wiring connections
2. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE:
- Check that the battery voltage is above 12 volts.
- Disconnect negative (-) terminal cable from the battery.
CAUTION: Work must be started after 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.
- Remove the union bolt holding the LH deliver pipe to the rear fuel pipe. Remove the 2 gaskets.
CAUTION:
- Put a shop towel under the delivery pipe.
- Slowly loosen the union bolt.
- Install the rear fuel pipe and SST 09268-45012 (pressure gauge) to the LH delivery pipe with 3 new gaskets and the union bolt.
Torque: 39 Nm (29 ft lb)
- Wipe off any splattered gasoline.
- Using SST 09843-18020 or equivalent, connect terminals B and FP of the DLC1.
- Reconnect the negative (-) terminal cable to the battery.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Measure the fuel pressure.
Fuel pressure: 265 - 304 kPa (38 - 44 psi)
- If pressure is high, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
- If pressure is low, check the following parts:
- Fuel hoses and connections
- Fuel pump
- Fuel filter
- Fuel pressure regulator
- Remove the SST from the DLC1.
- Start the engine.
- Disconnect the vacuum sensing hose from the fuel pressure regulator, and plug the hose end.
- Measure the fuel pressure at idling.
Fuel pressure: 265 - 304 kPa (38 - 44 psi)
- Reconnect the vacuum sensing hose to the fuel pressure regulator.
- Measure the fuel pressure at idling.
Fuel pressure: 196 - 235 kPa (28 - 34 psi)
- If pressure is not as specified, check the vacuum sensing hose and fuel pressure regulator.
- Stop the engine.
- Check that the fuel pressure remains 147 kPa (21 psi) or more for 5 minutes after the engine is turned off.
- If pressure is not as specified, check the fuel pump, pressure regulator and/or injectors.
- After checking fuel pressure, disconnect the negative (-) terminal cable from the battery and carefully remove the SST to prevent gasoline from splashing.
- Connect the rear fuel pipe to the delivery pipe with 2 new gaskets and the union bolt.
Torque: 39 Nm (29 ft lb)
- Reconnect negative (-) terminal cable to the battery.
- Check for fuel leaks.
