Throttle Position Sensor: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) sends a signal to the Engine Control Module indicating throttle angle and idle position of the throttle plate. The Sub Throttle Position Sensor, on vehicles equipped with TRAC (traction control), performs a similiar task reporting information regarding the Sub Throttle Plate which is actuated by the Engine Control Module.

OPERATION
Whenever the throttle is opened, a varied resistance signal is reported to the Engine Control Module. When the throttle is returned to the idle position, the idle switch portion of the sensor is closed.
