Ignition Timing: Adjustments

PROCEDURE

NOTE: The ignition timing can be inspected, however there is no adjustment for base ignition timing.

1. Connect a tachometer and timing light to engine.
- Connect the tester probe of the tachometer to terminal IG(-) of the Data Link Connector 1. Set the tachometer to the 4 cylinder range.

CAUTION: NEVER allow the tachometer terminal to touch ground as it could result in damage to the Igniter and/or Ignition Coil. As some tachometers are not compatible with this ignition system. we recommend that you confirm the compatibility of yours before use.

2. Check the Idle speed.
- Race the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for approximately 90 seconds.
- Check idle speed.

Idle: 650 to 750 rpm

3. Install jumper wire between Data Link Connector connector terminals TE1 and E1.
4. Allow engine to reach normal operating temperature.
5. Connect a timing light to No. 6 cylinder and inspect ignition timing.

Timing: 8 to 12° BTDC

If the ignition timing is not as specified, check that the following conditions are normal;
- Throttle valve fully closed.
- Continuity between terminals IDL and E2 of the Throttle Position sensor.
- Valve timing.
6. Remove jumper wire, tachometer and timing light.
