Removal
PROCEDURE1. Disconnect negative terminal cable from battery.
CAUTION: Work must be started after 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.
2. Drain engine coolant.
3. Remove intake air connector.
- Disconnect the following hoses:
- Air hose from Idle Air Control Valve (1)
- Air hose (from air control valve on power steering pump) from intake air connector (2)
- Remove the bolt holding the intake air connector to the cylinder head cover.
- Remove the 2 hose clamps.
- Disconnect the intake air connector from the throttle body and air cleaner hose, and remove the intake air connector.
4. Remove upper high-tension cord cover.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Disconnect the front side claw groove of the upper cord cover from the claw of lower cord cover, and remove the upper cord cover.
5. Remove the bolt and right hand engine wire cover.
6. Remove the 2 bolts and left hand engine wire cover.
7. Remove Vacuum Switching Valve for Evaporative system.
- Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the VSV from the cylinder head cover and timing belt cover.
8. Remove right hand No. 3 timing belt cover.
- Remove the 3 bolts, timing belt cover and 3 gaskets.
9. Remove left hand No. 3 timing belt cover.
- Remove the 4 bolts.
- Disconnect the cord grommet from the timing belt cover, and remove the timing belt cover and 3 gaskets.
- Remove the cord grommet from the high-tension cord.
10. Disconnect radiator hose from water inlet.
11. Remove drive belt idler pulley.
- Remove the pulley bolt, cover plate and idler pulley.
12. Remove right hand No. 2 timing belt cover.
- Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector from the ignition coil bracket.
- Disconnect the camshaft position sensor wire from the timing belt cover.
- Remove the 5 bolts.
- Remove the connector grommet from the timing belt cover.
- Disconnect the camshaft position sensor wire clamp from the timing belt cover.
- Remove the timing belt cover and 4 gaskets.
13. Remove left hand No. 2 timing belt cover.
- Disconnect the camshaft position sensor wire from the clamp on the timing belt cover.
- Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector.
- Remove the 3 bolts.
- Remove the connector grommet from the timing belt cover.
- Remove the timing belt cover and 2 gaskets.
14. Disconnect high - tension cords from distributor caps.
- Disconnect the high - tension cords at the rubber boot. Do not pull on the cord.
NOTICE: Pulling or bending the cords may damage the conductor inside.
15. Remove distributor caps.
- Loosen the bolts and remove the 2 distributor caps.
HINT: Arrange the distributor caps (RH side and LH side).
16. Loosen the bolts, and remove the 2 distributor rotors.
HINT: Arrange the distributor rotors (RH side and LH side).
17. Remove distributor housings.
- Right hand Distributor Housing:
- Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector.
- Remove the 3 bolts and distributor housing. Remove the 2 distributor housings.
18. Remove the bolts, screws and camshaft position sensors from distributor housings.
