Inspection Procedure

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1. Check voltage between terminals exhaust gas recirculation 1 to 4 of engine control module connector and body ground.

- Connect the Check Harness A.
- Turn ignition switch on.
- Measure voltage between terminals exhaust gas recirculation 1 to 4 of engine control module connector and body ground.

Voltage: 9 - 14 volts

- If OK proceed to step 5.
- If not OK proceed to step 2.
2. Check voltage between terminals B1 and B2 of exhaust gas recirculation step motor connector and body ground.

- Disconnect exhaust gas recirculation step motor connector.
- Turn ignition switch on.
- Measure voltage between terminals Bi and B2 of exhaust gas recirculation step motor connector and body ground.

Voltage: 9 - 14 volts

- If OK proceed to step 3.
- If not OK check for engine control module power source circuit.
3. Check resistance of exhaust gas recirculation step motor.

- Disconnect exhaust gas recirculation step motor connector.
- Measure resistance between terminals shown:

Terminal B1 - S1: 19.9 - 23.4 ohms
Terminal B1 - S3: 19.9 - 23.4 ohms
Terminal B2 - S2: 19.9 - 23.4 ohms
Terminal B2 - S4: 19.9 - 23.4 ohms

- If OK proceed to step 4.
- If not OK replace exhaust gas recirculation step motor.
4. Check for open and short in harness and connector between exhaust gas recirculation step motor and engine control module.
- If OK check and replace engine control module.
- If not OK repair or replace harness or connector.
5. Check operation for exhaust gas recirculation valve.
- Remove exhaust gas recirculation valve.

- Connect the battery positive lead to terminals 5 (B1) and 2 (B2), and while repeately grounding 4 (Si) and 1 (S2) and 6 (S3) and 3 (S4) and 4 (S1) in sequence.
- Keep the previous terminal grounded while proceeding to the next grounding.
- The valve moves in the closing direction.

- Connect the battery positive lead to terminals 5 (B1) and 2 (B2), and while repeately grounding 3 (S4) and 6 (S3) and 1 (S2) and 4 (S1) and 3 (S4) in sequence.
- Keep the previous terminal grounded while proceeding to the next grounding.
- Perform this operation after closing the valve by performing step (1) above. The valve moves in the opening direction.
- If OK proceed to step 6.
- If not OK replace exhaust gas recirculation valve.
6. Check resistance of exhaust gas recirculation gas temperature sensor.

- Disconnect exhaust gas recirculation gas temperature sensor connector.
- Measure resistance between terminals of exhaust gas recirculation gas temperature sensor connector.

64 - 97 k ohms at 5O°C (122°F)
11 - 16 k ohms at 10O°C (212°F)
2 - 4 k ohms at 15O°C (302°F)

- If OK proceed to step 7.
- If not OK replace exhaust gas recirculation gas temperature sensor.
7. Check for open and short in harness and connector between exhaust gas recirculation gas temperature sensor and engine control module.
- If OK check and replace engine control module.
- If not OK repair or replace harness or connector.
