Transmission/Transaxle Replacement





ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Remove and Install the parts as shown.





NOTICE: Before removal of transmission. disconnect the throttle cable from the relative parts in the engine compartment in the following order.

A: Throttle lever
B: Throttle cable bracket
C: Clamp
D: Clamp
E: Clamp

TRANSMISSION REMOVAL

NOTICE: Work must be started after approx. 90 seconds or longer from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.

1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL CABLE FROM BATTERY

2. REMOVE A/T OIL LEVEL GAUGE





3. DISCONNECT THROTTLE CABLE





4. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE





5. REMOVE FILLER TUBE
Remove the bolt and the tube.





6. REMOVE HEAT INSULATOR





7. REMOVE REAR CENTER FLOOR CROSSMEMBER BRASS
Remove the four bolts and the brass.





8. REMOVE FRONT CENTER FLOOR CROSSMEMBER BRASS
Remove the four bolts and the brass.





9. REMOVE SHIFT CONTROL ROD
(a) Remove the nut from the shift lever.





(b) Remove the nut and control rod with the control shaft lever.





10. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT





11. DISCONNECT CONNECTORS AND CLAMPS
(a) Disconnect the following connectors:
(1) O/D direct clutch speed sensor connector
(2) No.1 VSS connector for Speedometer
(3) No.2 VSS connector for ECM
(4) PNP switch connector
(5) Solenoid connector

(b) Disconnect the five wire clamps from the bracket on transmission.





12. REMOVE TWO OIL COOLER TUBES
(a) Remove the bolt and the oil cooler tube clamp.





(b) Remove two oil cooler tubes.





13. REMOVE SIX TORQUE CONVERTER MOUNTING BOLTS
(a) Remove the engine under cover.
(b) Remove two bolts and the converter plate.





(c) Remove each bolts by turning crankshaft.





14. JACK UP TRANSMISSION

15. REMOVE REAR MOUNTING
Remove four bolts and the rear mounting.





16. REMOVE TRANSMISSION
Remove ten bolts and the transmission.

TORQUE CONVERTER CLEANING
If the transmission is contaminated, the torque converter and transmission cooler should be thoroughly flushed with ATF.





TORQUE CONVERTER AND DRIVE PLATE INSPECTION
INSPECT ONE-WAY CLUTCH
(a) Install SST so that it fits in the notch of the converter hub and outer race of the one-way clutch. SST 09350-30020 (09351-32020).





(b) Press on the serrations of stator with a finger and rotate it. Check if it rotates smoothly when turned clockwise and locks up when turned counterclockwise.

TRANSMISSION INSTALLATION





1. CHECK TORQUE CONVERTER INSTALLATION
Using calipers and a straight edge, measure from the installed surface of the torque converter to the front surface of the transmission housing.

Correct distance:
17.1mm (0.673 in.)


If the distance is less than the standard, check for an improper installation.





2. LIFT ENGINE FRONT SIDE





3. INSTALL TRANSMISSION
Install the transmission with eight bolts.

Torque:
14 mm bolt 39 N.m (400 kgf.cm. 29 ft.lbf)
17 mm bolt 57 N.m (580 kgf.cm, 42 ft.lbf)






4. INSTALL REAR MOUNTING
Install the rear mounting with four bolts.

Torque: 25 N.m (260 kgf.cm. 19 ft.lbf)





5. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER MOUNTING BOLTS
(a) Install each bolts by turning crankshaft.

Torque: 33 N.m (340 kgf.cm, 25 ft.lbf)





(b) Install the converter plate with tow bolts.
(c) Install the engine under cover.





6. INSTALL TWO OIL COOLER TUBES
(a) Install two oil cooler tubes.
(b) Install the bolt and the oil cooler tube clamp.

7. CONNECT CONNECTORS AND CLAMPS





B. INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT





9. INSTALL SHIFT CONTROL ROD
(a) Install the control rod with the control shaft lever.
(b) Install the nut from the shift lever.





10. INSTALL FRONT CENTER FLOOR CROSSMEMBER BRASS
Install the brass with four bolts.





11. INSTALL REAR CENTER FLOOR CROSSMEMBER BRASS
Install the brass with four bolts.





12. INSTALL HEAT INSULATOR





13. INSTALL FILLER TUBE





14. INSTALL EXHAUST PIPE





15. CONNECT AND ADJUST THROTTLE CABLE

16. INSTALL A/T OIL LEVEL GAUGE

17. CONNECT NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL CABLE TO BATTERY

16. CHECK FLUID LEVEL
