Fuel Pump Control Unit: Description and Operation
Fuel Pump ECU:
PURPOSE
The fuel pump ECU controls fuel pump speed based on fuel demand conditions as determined by the ECM.
LOCATION
Mounted in the left rear of the passenger compartment, behind the quarter trim panel.
OPERATION
The ECM determines engine fuel demand by monitoring throttle position, engine speed and airflow. During periods of high engine demand and during start-up, the fuel pump ECU provides the fuel pump with full system voltage. During idling or light engine loading, voltage to the fuel pump is reduced to approximately 9 volts. Reduced fuel pump volume and pump noise are the result of the power reduction.
