Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
Cam Position Sensor Signals:
PURPOSE
The camshaft position sensors report camshaft rotation to the ECM. By overlapping the signal from the engine speed signal (NE) with that of the camshaft (G1 and G2) sensors, very accurate recording of cylinder position is possible.
LOCATION
Mounted inside both distributor housings.
CONSTRUCTION
Each sensor is a simple magnetic pickup.
Cam Position Sensor Operation:
OPERATION
Each sensor reads a protrusion on the camshaft drive sprocket. As the protrusion passes over the sensor tip, the sensors magnetic field collapses and causes a voltage spike. The spike is read by the ECM.
