Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

Ignition System Schematic:

PURPOSE
The camshaft position sensors report camshaft rotation to the ECM. By overlapping the signal from the engine speed signal (NE) with that of the camshaft (G1 and G2) sensors, very accurate recording of cylinder position is possible.

LOCATION
Mounted inside distributor housing.

CONSTRUCTION
Each sensor is a simple magnetic pickup.

OPERATION
Each sensor reads a protrusion on the distributor shaft. As the protrusion passes over the sensor tip, the sensors magnetic field collapses and causes a voltage spike. The spike is read by the ECM.
