Engine: Service and Repair
1. On models with coded audio anti-theft systems, refer to Technician Safety Information for code procedures. On models with air bag system, disarm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.2. Remove battery and battery tray, then the hood.
3. Remove engine undercover, then drain engine coolant and engine oil intoseparate suitable containers.
4. Disconnect control cables from throttle body, then remove air cleaner assembly.
5. Remove drive belt, fan with fluid coupling and water pump pulley, Fig. 1.

6. Remove radiator as follows:
a. Disconnect reservoir hose from radiator, then the upper and lower radiator hoses from water inlet and outlet.
b. Disconnect A/T oil cooler hoses from radiator. Plug hose ends.
c. Remove upper radiator supports, then the radiator with hoses attached.
7. Remove charcoal canister.
8. Disconnect power steering pump, Fig. 2. Do not disconnect hoses.

9. Remove A/C compressor, Fig. 3. Do not disconnect hoses.

10. Disconnect engine wire and hoses as follows:
a. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose from union, then the fuel return hose from engine oil dipstick guide clamp and fuel return pipe. Plug all openings.
b. Disconnect engine room main wire, igniter and theft deterrent horn electrical connectors, then the engine wirer from wire clamps.
c. Remove connector bracket, then disconnect wire clamp and P/S solenoid valve electrical connector.
d. Disconnect ground strap from cylinder block, then the P/S pressure switch electrical connector.
e. Disconnect ignition coil and noise filter electrical connectors, then remove cap and nut and disconnect generator wire.
f. Disconnect engine wire from wire clamps, then the heater valve VSV vacuum hose from check valve.
g. Disconnect heater water hoses from heater water valve and water bypass valve.
h. Disconnect VSV electrical connector, then the ground strap from bracket on body.
i. Remove engine wire protector bolt, then the engine wire protector and engine wire clamp.
11. On models with manual transmission, remove transmission shift lever.
12. Disconnect ECM, ABS & TRAC ECU, TRAC ECU, connector cassette and A/C control assembly electrical connectors, Fig. 6.

13. Pull engine wire from passenger compartment.
14. Disconnect power steering pipe from engine, Fig. 7.

15. Remove union bolt and two gaskets, then disconnect fuel inlet hose. Suspend hose union end upward.
16. Remove starter, then disconnect ground wire from engine.
17. On models with manual transmission, disconnect clutch release cylinder from transmission.
18. Remove No. 2 exhaust pipe and exhaust pipe heat insulator.
19. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect transmission control rod.
20. Remove two propeller shaft centersupport bearing set bolts and adjusting washers.
21. Place matchmarks on both flanges, then remove four bolts, washers, nuts and propeller shaft, Fig. 8.

22. Insert transmission oil plug tool No. 09325-00010, or equivalent, in transmission tail shaft to prevent oil leaks.

23. Attach suitable engine hoist chain to engine hangers, then remove two engine to suspension crossmember nuts, Fig. 9.

24. Remove four bolts, four nuts and rear engine mounting member.
25. Lift engine with transmission attached out of vehicle, then place engine and transmission on suitable stand.
26. Separate engine and transmission.
27. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications. If audio system was disabled, activate as outlined under Technician Safety Information. On models with air bag system, rearm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
