PRODUCTION CHANGE DESCRIPTION:
Panasonic has implemented the following countermeasures for CD skipping conditions:
12/91 Optical lens were changed to reduce deformation with temperature. Lens deformation reduces the CD changers ability to focus on the CD.
12/91 Spring tension of the loading guide pins was increased to reduce contact with a playing CD. Contact with the CD reduces the CD changer's ability to spin the CD at the required speed.
9/92 Changes to the coating of the CD magazine clips, insert/eject roller shape and an addition of a brush to clean the lower roller were made to reduce the occurrence of small, clear pieces of protective coating contaminating the playing surface (shinny side) of the CD. These pieces which scrape off the edge of the CD, can cause the CD Changer to skip or not play.
The small pieces of protective surface coating have the appearance of scratches and consist of small transparent flakes that adhere to the disc surface. When these flakes are present, the CD changer cannot properly track which results in skipping or won't play conditions. It is important to know that these flakes do not damage the disc. Proper cleaning of the disc will restore the disc to its original condition.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE:
1) Verify the customers complaint.
2) Verify that the problem is not caused by the following:
* Rough road surfaces causing the CD to skip.
* Objects in the trunk bumping the CD changer (usually on left turns).
* Damaged or dirty CD discs (scratches, oil, fingerprints).
CD CLEANING PROCEDURE:
1) Clean the CD playing surface (shinny side) the CD radially (from the center to the outer edge) with a soft clean cloth. Do not wipe in a circular motion. Make sure that all contaminates have been removed from the playing surface.
2) If there are shavings on the edge of the CD, rub the edge of the CD with the side of a pencil until the shavings are removed.
