Engine Block Heater - Installation Instructions

The following installation instructions for the LS400 engine block heater have been revised to accommodate an early production change made to the engine block. The engine block heater mounting hole cover plate is currently mounted with two studs and nuts. Initially, the cover plate was attached with bolts.

INSTALLATION:
1. Place car on a lube rack or hydraulic hoist as the installation will be done from underneath.
2. Drain the coolant from the radiator and drain bolt on the rear of the engine block.
3. Remove the engine splash guard.
4. Remove the sealing plate from the heater mounting hole on the right front side of the engine (FIG. 1).
5. Remove the two studs from the engine block.
6. Remove any burrs or compound from core plug hole.
7. Lubricate heater assembly "O" ring and machined surface of hole in engine block with grease or vaseline to facilitate installation and prevent "O" ring damage.
8. Loosly install the heater assembly and bracket with the 8 mm socket head bolts and spring washers (FIG. 2). Tighten bolts to 10 - 12 ft.lbs.

9. Remove the right dust cover. From the front of the vehicle, route the block heater plug end of the cord through the opening between the A/C condenser and the right headlight (FIG. 3).

Route the cord under the air duct and along the top ABS brake line. Route the cord down to the heater. Keep the cord away from the exhaust manifold and the air conditioning high side line. Secure cord to the ABS brake line at areas "a, b, c, d" with electrical tape (FIG. 4).

Also, secure cord to A/C condenser bracket area "e" (FIG. 5). Reinstall the right dust cover. Ensure that the cord won't be damaged by hot parts or when the hood is closed.
10. Reinstall the engine splash guard.
11. Refill and bleed the cooling system as described in the Service Manual (use only Toyota recommended coolant). Run the engine and check for leaks.
