Rear Knuckle: Service and Repair

When removing rear axle hub and carrier, be careful not to damage the sensor control rotor.
Removal
1. Refer to Fig. 1 when removing rear axle hub and carrier.
2. Remove disc brake caliper and rotor.
3. Remove rear axle hub as follows:
a. Remove four axle hub mounting bolts.
b. Remove axle hub and parking brake assembly.
c. Remove O-ring from axle carrier.
4. Remove rear axle carrier as follows:
a. Remove strut rod bolt from axle carrier.
b. Remove No. 1 and No. 2 suspension arm mounting bolts from axle carrier.
c. Remove axle carrier mounting bolt from shock absorber, then the axle carrier.
Installation
1. Refer to Fig. 1 when installing rear axle hub and carrier.
2. Install rear axle carrier as follows:
a. Place axle carrier in position, then install axle carrier mounting bolt to shock absorber and torque to specifications.
b. Temporarily connect No. 1 and No. 2 suspension arms to axle carrier.
c. Temporarily connect strut rod to axle carrier.
3. Install rear axle hub as follows:
a. Install parking brake assembly and new oil seal to axle carrier.
b. Install axle hub and torque bolts to specification.
c. Install rotor and disc brake assembly.
4. Install wheel and tire assembly and torque to specifications, then lower vehicle and bounce up and down several times to stabilize suspension.
5. Torque axle carrier mounting bolts to specification with vehicle weight on suspension.
6. Check rear wheel alignment.
