Valve Clearance: Adjustments
Adjust valves with the engine cold.
1. Remove air intake chamber. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD & INTAKE.
2. Remove cylinder head covers.
3. Set No. 1 cylinder to TDC. If No. 1 intake is loose and No. 1 exhaust is tight it is properly set. If not, turn crank one revolution and recheck.

4. All valve clearances should be .005-.009 inch for intake valves and .011-.015 inch for exhaust valves. Check the valves as follows:
a. With engine set at TDC, check valves in Fig. 18.
b. Rotate crank two-thirds (240°) and check valves in Fig. 19.
c. Rotate crank another two-thirds and check valves in Fig. 20.

5. If any check out of specification, proceed as follows:
a. Turn crank until camshaft lobe is upward.
b. Press down valve lifter with shim removal tool 09248-55011 or equivalent. Place another shim removal tool between camshaft and lifter, Fig. 21. Remove shim with a screwdriver and a magnet.
c. Using a micrometer, measure shim thickness.
d. Calculate shim thickness using the following formulas: intake N=T+(A-.007 inch), exhaust N=T+(A-.013 inch): T=thickness of used shim, A=measured valve clearance, N=thickness of new shim.
e. Place new shim on valve lifter. Press down lifter and remove shim removal tools.
f. Recheck valve clearance.
6. Install cylinder head covers.
7. Install air intake chamber.
