Cooling System Partial Draining, Filling and Bleeding

Trustmark Authoring Standards (TAS) Repair Procedures

NOTE: TAS style procedures can be identified by steps that have no accompanying step text and the magenta color of the electrical connectors and fasteners such as nuts, bolts, clamps or clips.

A TAS removal and installation procedure uses a sequence of color illustrations to indicate the order to be followed when removing/disassembling or installing/assembling a component.

Specification data
Specification procedures will only contain technical data that is not already part of a repair procedure.

Sequence of tasks
If components must be removed or installed in a specific sequence, the sequence will be identified numerically in a graphic and the corresponding text will be numbered accordingly.

Special Tools, Equipment, Materials and Torque Figures

Special tools will be shown with the tool numbers in the illustration. The special tool numbers, general equipment, materials and torque figures used for the procedure step will be shown in the text column.

TAS Graphics

Colors used in the graphic are as follows:
Blue - Component to be removed/installed or disassembled/assembled.
Green and Brown - Additional components that need to be removed/installed or disassembled/assembled prior to the target component.
Yellow - Component that is touched or affected in a way but remains in the vehicle. It may be detached, attached, moved, modified, checked, adjusted etc.
Magenta - Electrical connectors and fasteners such as nuts, bolts, clamps and clips.
Pale Blue - Special tool(s) and general equipment.

One illustration may have multiple steps assigned to it.

Numbered pointers are used to indicate the number of electrical connectors and fasteners such as nuts, bolts, clamps and clips.

Items in the illustration can be transparent or use cutouts to show hidden details.

General Procedures

Draining

WARNING: Since injury such as scalding could be caused by escaping steam or coolant, make sure the vehicle cooling system is cool prior to carrying out this procedure.

1. WARNING: Make sure to support the vehicle with axle stands.

Raise and support the vehicle.

2. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe T-Connector.
3. Refer to: Engine Undershield.
4.

5. WARNING: When releasing the cooling system pressure, cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a thick cloth.

6. CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.

7. CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.

8. Torque: 5 Nm
9.

Filling

1.

2.

3. NOTE: Where fitted.

4. Torque: 9 Nm

5. NOTE: Keep the coolant expansion tank vertically.

Raise the coolant expansion tank minimum 110mm from its original position.

6.
7.

8. CAUTION: Anti-freeze concentration must be maintained at 50%.

Fill the coolant expansion tank to the rim and continue until coolant is visable from the outlet.

NOTE: Once coolant is visable from the outlet, close the bleeding points.

9.
10.

11. NOTE: Where fitted.

12. Continue to fill the coolant expansion tank to the rim until the coolant level stops dropping.

13.
14. Set the heater controls to maximum.
15. Start and run the engine.

16. Once coolant is visable from the outlet, close the bleeding points.
17. Continue to fill the coolant expansion tank to the rim until the coolant level stops dropping.

18.
- Switch the engine off.
- Wait a minimum of 1 minute.

19.
- Start and run the engine.
- Hold the engine speed at 2000 RPM until the coolant level stops dropping.

20. Increase the engine speed from idle to 3500 RPM until hot air is emitted from the front and rear face vents.
21. Install the expansion tank cap after making sure that the final coolant level is 40mm above the maximum cold fill line.
22. Run the engine until the thermostat opens and hot air is emitted from the front and rear face vents.
23. Switch the engine off and allow to cool.
24. Install the coolant expansion tank.

25. WARNINGS:
- When releasing the cooling system pressure, cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a thick cloth.
- Since injury such as scalding could be caused by escaping steam or coolant, make sure the vehicle cooling system is cool prior to carrying out this procedure.

CAUTION: Make sure the coolant level remains above the "COLD FILL RANGE" lower level mark.

Check and top-up the coolant if required.

26. Visually check the engine and cooling system for signs of coolant leakage.
27.

28. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe T-Connector.
29. Refer to: Engine Undershield.
