Steering Gear
This is a "Trustmark Authoring Standards (TAS) Repair Procedure"
- TAS style procedures can be identified by steps that have no accompanying step text and the magenta color of the electrical connectors and fasteners such as nuts, bolts, clamps or clips.
- TAS removal and installation procedures use a sequence of color illustrations to indicate the order to be followed when removing/disassembling or installing/assembling a component.
- Many of the TAS procedures will have the installation information within the removal steps.
- The TAS color illustrations use a variety of symbols to indicate important details of the procedures. It is important to understand these symbols in order to properly used the TAS procedures.

Removal

CAUTION: Nuts and bolts must be tightened with the weight of the vehicle on the suspension.

NOTE:
Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

NOTE:
LHD illustration shown, RHD is similar.

All vehicles









WARNING: Make sure that a new steering column flexible coupling bolt is installed.

Torque to: 25 Nm





WARNING: Make sure that new nuts are installed.

CAUTION: Make sure that the specified torque is not exceeded, or the retaining studs may shear and damage the body panel.

Torque to: 2.8 Nm

WARNING: Make sure to support the vehicle with axle stands.
1 Raise and support the vehicle.
2 Repeat for the other wheel.

Torque to: 12 Nm





Vehicles with diesel particulate filter (DPF)





All vehicles





WARNING: Make sure that a new nut is installed.

CAUTION: Make sure that the ball joint ball does not rotate.
Tie aside.
Bolt: 10 Nm
nut: 55 Nm
Repeat the above step for the other side.





WARNING: Make sure that a new nut is installed.

CAUTION: Make sure that the ball joint ball does not rotate.

Torque to: 133 Nm
Repeat the above step for the other side.





CAUTION: Make sure that the ball joint seal is not damaged.

NOTE:
Some variation in the illustrations may occur, but the essential information is always correct.

Special Service Tool




Splitter, Ball Joints, 205-754A
Repeat the above step for the other side.





Torque to: 110 Nm





Torque to: 175 Nm
Step 1: 140 Nm

Step 2: 45 degree
Repeat the above step for the other side.




E21 - Transmission jack





CAUTION: Make sure that new subframe bolts are installed.

Torque to: 45 Nm
Step 1: 140 Nm

Step 2: 240 degree





CAUTION: Make sure that new subframe bolts are installed.

Step 1: 140 Nm

Step 2: 240 degree





Torque to: 10 Nm





Torque to: 10 Nm





















Vehicles with diesel particulate filter (DPF)





All vehicles





Torque to: 189 Nm

Vehicles with 2.2L engine





NOTE:
Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

Torque to: 10 Nm

Vehicles with 2.0L engine





Torque to: 10 Nm

CAUTION: Use the special tool to align the components.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.

1 Using the diagnostic tool, calibrate the new steering gear.

2 Check the suspension system ride height.
